Is it a good idea to ask the question “what are we”?

This girl and I have been talking for quite some time and we have become very close. But I also sometimes get the feeling we are more like best friends. (My friends tell me I am just an overthinking dumbass) But should I just ask her what I am to her? And if so, with what circumstances

I think that is something that you absolutely can discuss. First, what is it that you want to be? Do you want to be just friends or something more than that. I would think about that long and hard first because it will prepare you for her answer when you do ask her.

As far as actually asking her, there are many ways to do that. First, you can simply ask. Another way is if you decide you would like to be more, then you can tell her that and let her respond. Just say something like, "I have really enjoyed our time together and you have been a great friend. I just wanted to let you know that I feel like we could be more than that." Then you wait for her response.

Of course, the really BIG downside to this is that you could ruin a friendship altogether. If she sees you nothing more than a friend and you profess your feelings, she might back away. That is why I would look for some signs of flirting and such before making this move from friends to possible boyfriend/girlfriend.

My intention has always been to be more than friends. She also used to flirt very aggressively but now flirts in a milder way. Her best friend also asked me what she is to me.
But the thing is that, the closer I get to her. I also sometimes feel like a very very close friend, I am also wondering if this is normal since I never had this feeling with previous girls I dated.

It could be very normal for you if that is how you have felt in the past. Nothing wrong with that and everyone is different. I see no reason if she is flirty and her friends are asking about it that you shouldn't discuss it with her.

I think there is enough evidence that she likes you more than a friend here. That is just my opinion from the details you have given. I say go for it.
