When I was playing varsity baseball in high school, I could do leg splits.
There was a LOT of stretching involved, with blocks placed under your leg (left leg in my own case) to prevent you from dropping down too far and too fast. Once your legs reach the block, hold the position for a couple of minutes, rest and then repeat. As your stretching progresses you use thinner and thinner blocks for support until you eventually stretch completely.
If I tried to do legs splits now, I'd tear myself in half!
