I'm not used to getting compliments so when I do I only know how to say thank you very awkwardly? How should I be responding

Just say "thanks". The things you shouldn't do is ask "why" or start to argue about the validity of the compliment.

Even if you don't agree with the compliment, just go with it. If you argue about their favorable opinion of you, it will end in disaster.

And if you ask "why", it comes across as you not believing what they are saying about you. So don't do that.

I used to emotionally reject them and deflect because it did not align with how I felt… my early trauma.

I now accept them or ask more questions so I hear more positive details.

There is a trust element to this… if it feels manipulative you have to learn to handle without being manipulated

Depends on the compliment and the person. If it's about my physical looks, I'm always going to be in disbelief, think that' you're making fun of me...

if it's about like what I'm wearing, I like what I'm wearing too so I'll be enthusiastic about it haha

An awkward thank you is better than my ex boyfriend's response. I was very attracted to him and very time I geniounly complimented him, he would say "yeah right" or "as if" or other insecure responses. It turned me off and made me think twice before I complimented him again.
