Trending & News I'm not used to getting compliments so when I do I only know how to say thank you very awkwardly? How should I be responding

Just say "thanks". The things you shouldn't do is ask "why" or start to argue about the validity of the compliment.
Even if you don't agree with the compliment, just go with it. If you argue about their favorable opinion of you, it will end in disaster.
And if you ask "why", it comes across as you not believing what they are saying about you. So don't do that.
Thank you, very nice of you to say that, you're very kind. All great responses to say, if you believe it or not.
I used to emotionally reject them and deflect because it did not align with how I felt… my early trauma.
I now accept them or ask more questions so I hear more positive details.
There is a trust element to this… if it feels manipulative you have to learn to handle without being manipulated
Depends on the compliment and the person. If it's about my physical looks, I'm always going to be in disbelief, think that' you're making fun of me...
if it's about like what I'm wearing, I like what I'm wearing too so I'll be enthusiastic about it haha
If it's about something I'm doing, most of the time I dont think I'm doing that great, but thanks anyway haha
An awkward thank you is better than my ex boyfriend's response. I was very attracted to him and very time I geniounly complimented him, he would say "yeah right" or "as if" or other insecure responses. It turned me off and made me think twice before I complimented him again.
Don't be my ex-boyfriend.
When someone pays you a compliment, it’s important to know how to respond in a way that is both professional and polite.
Here are a few tips on how to do just that:
1. Smile and say thank you. This is always a good way to start.
2. If the compliment is about your work, you can say something like, “I’m glad you like it.”
3. If the compliment is about your appearance, you can say something like, “Thank you, I feel great today.”
4. If you’re not sure how to respond, you can always just say, “Thank you, I appreciate it.”
5. Whatever you do, don’t downplay the compliment or brush it off. Accept it graciously and with a smile.
When it comes to responding to a compliment, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, be sure to thank the person for the compliment. Second, keep it short and sweet - there's no need to go into a long-winded explanation about why you're so great. And finally, if you're feeling flirty, you can add a little bit of flirtation to your response.
Here are a few examples of how to respond to a compliment flirty:
When someone pays you a compliment, it’s only natural to want to say something back. But, sometimes, it’s hard to know how to respond to a compliment in a way that sounds both polite and genuine.
Here are a few tips on how to respond to compliments politely:
1. Say “thank you.”
This is always a good place to start. It’s simple and gracious, and it shows that you appreciate the compliment.
2. Don’t downplay the compliment.
If someone says you did a great job, don’t say, “Oh, it was nothing.” Just say “thank you.”
3. Don’t fish for more compliments.
If someone pays you a compliment, resist the urge to fish for more compliments by saying things like, “Do you really think so?” or “What do you like best about it?” Just say “thank you” and move on.
4. Don’t make it about yourself.
If someone pays you a compliment, don’t turn it into an opportunity to talk about yourself. For example, if someone compliments your dress, don’t say, “Thanks, I just got it on sale.” Just say “thank you.”
5. Don’t compare yourself to others.
If someone pays you a compliment, don’t immediately start comparing yourself to others. For example, if someone says you’re a great singer, don’t say, “Oh, I’m not as good as Adele.” Just say “thank you.”
6. Don’t dismiss the compliment.
If someone pays you a compliment, don’t immediately dismiss it. For example, if someone says you’re beautiful, don’t say, “Oh, I don’t know about that.” Just say “thank you.”
7. Don’t argue with the compliment.
If someone pays you a compliment, don’t argue with them. For example, if someone says you’re smart, don’t say, “No, I’m not.” Just say “thank you.”
8. Don’t be vague.
If someone pays you a compliment, don’t be vague in your response. For example, if someone says you’re a great friend, don’t just say, “Oh, thanks.” Say “Thank you, I’m really glad to be your friend.”
9. Don’t forget to pay compliments yourself.
If someone pays you a compliment, don’t forget to pay them one back. Compliments are a two-way street, after all.
10. Have fun with it.
If someone pays you a compliment, don’t take yourself too seriously. Just have fun with it and enjoy the moment.

I either just say "oh thaanks" - normally or I will say "Yeah i already knew haha just kidding thaanks"
And depending if I like something on them, I do give compliments back
Nice username
Thaanks, yours is pretty funny tho
Thanks. there's some meaning behind mine though. ;) :P
You wanna explain?
Ok its a bit dark but i like you so i will explain for you.
For about the longest time in my life i've struggled with confidence. i had virtually zero just about 3-4 years ago. By about 2019 i had a bit of a mental breakdown, i felt like i was going nowhere with my life, i wasn't doing well dating, i was struggling finding a good job, and i was bitter, angry jealous over everyone around me seemingly doing so much better that i was and... my mind just fucking snapped. i lost all sense of reality and time. i no longer knew who i was anymore. and i suspected everyone and everyting being in some kind of crazy game and conspiring against me... and so much to the point where i attempted to take my own life... several times. i tried to toss myself over a cliff, i was very tempted to consume poisonous chemicals, I almost drove over a cliff. and anoter time i was speeding around with my car just hoping a cop would stop me... and shoot my ass.
but despite ALL of that... i still made it. and early in 2021 i finally started coming back into reality. i started to see things clearly for the first time in ages. i found my soul so to speak. i knew who i was now and what my purpose in life is.
I am Still Alive. :)
Yeah that is pretty dark, sorry that you had to go through this, It must have been awful but I'm glad you came out of it and I'm sure stronger than before too 🙏🏼 It's good that you're still alive and doing what makes you happy and keep going
Yes i feel very grateful for my life... and i no longer fear death... really for the most part im pretty fearless now. i guess staring into the abyss and walking away kinda... emboldens you in some way.
Anyways thanks for listening. you seem like a very genuine person. hope all goes well for you melanieeB :)
Sure, I'm really always there if someone needs somebody to talk to. But like again I'm glad you're here and definitely you did got stronger because of that awful time in your life 🙏🏼 that's really awesome
I might be a positive person but I struggle with my inner conflicts. So when I receive a genuine compliment, I barely feel anything and take it as a statement. I need time to heal 😊 I have learned to be more appreciative and it got a little bit better.
At the end of the day, I compliment this person back
Depends on the compliment.
If you compliment me on my job, I’ll probably respond with “I know!”.
If you compliment me on something else i’ve done well, i’ll probably say, “Thanx for noticing!”
If you compliment me on my appearance i’ll laugh.
If a compliment is obviously contrived, i’ll ignore it completely.
Being a lead vocalist in bands since I was 15, I've had countless compliments, even on bad days. I still blush and feel like I can't thank them enough. Kind of the same when getting a Christmas gift you're really not excited about, but still very appreciative.
Awkwardly. I’m not good with compliments. They completely throw me off. With family I try to act casual but if a random stranger or coworker were to compliment me I find it awkward and try to say thank you but that’s just awkward too
I say thank you and feel and act awkward. I don’t fully believe it and certain compliments from guys like about my body/looks make me feel uncomfortable. But if I like them then a lot of times I’ll give them a compliment back
It makes me feel good and I get happy whenever I get a compliment to me it’s one of the best feelings so I smile and say thank you 😁 but I guess there has been times where it has been awkward and I’m like🤨 thank you?
I saw thank you in a chipper tone and pay them a compliment back. Not about to share my secrets on what I resort to if I can't find anything nice to compliment a person on though. 😂
Same I'm not used to them so I get embarrassed. I just smile and say thank you. There's nothing wrong with wha you're doing but if you don't smile then smile genuinely.
Well, for example, if someone says
"You have a nice smile,"
You should say:
"Fuckin' A."
I mean, it would be, which would make me really dig her.
Ah. Well then you should say "Thanks! I appreciate you!" in a loud and confident voice.
I just assume they're joking since I honestly doubt anyone would compliment me honestly. I'd just say "thank you" and move on.
I like to say thank you and give them a genuine complement in return. Like if they the
Like if they say, “thanks for washing the dishes, your so great.” “Well thank you for being an amazing chef and making me dinner.”
Just be sure not to diminish yourself.
Ooooo, what was the compliment? In that case I’d just say, “thanks for noticing!” *Big smile*
Awww! I’d just say, “awww! Thank you!” Also that’s a really cool job and a sweet compliment.
If someone says "Wow, you're so beautiful!"
Say, "Yep! And I'm smart too."
I don't many so most times I don't even notice the subtle ones. The obvious ones takes me a min to process.. Also it's different if it's a stranger or friends and family. Usually friends and family I consider fake..
I don't. I just give a deaf ear to that. I totally dislike hearing any type of compliments.
A simple thank you, with a smile while blushing ☺️☺️
A simple thank you that’s very sweet is enough! :) don’t overthink it!
Try and swerve it like I’m in the dodgeball film
I don't know... Im with you on this it feels weird
You should respond by saying "I know, thank you"
I also say thank you awkwardly and change the subject 😅
that is a perfectly fine answer, no need to change it...
lmao same. if it isn't creepy or pervy, i just say thank you very high pitched and then return the compliment
There's nothing wrong with just saying thank you, I appreciate your compliment
I hear you loud and clear. I hate compliments; whether about appearance or work. I just say a quick thank you and start talking about something else.
Say thanks smile give a complement back wink do all we take any Compliment that comes our way
i usually just say thanks, i’m skeptical of compliments in general cuz i usually just think whoever’s giving them just wants something else from me like when a girl gives them it’s mostly just so you give her a compliment back.
Say thank you with a smile is all. Don't say 'I know'.
You calmly smile and say "Thanks you."
jsut an awkward ty if its from somebody i want compliments from
a dry thansk if i dont want the compliment from them
"Thanks, that's very kind of you", is usually generic enough to cover any compliment.
Depends who's saying it and whether I feel they have an ulterior motive for doing so. Most people don't give genuine compliments. But almost always regardless I say "thank you". I just say thank
Wdym how to respond to a compliment? What was the compliment?
Oh that's natural lol nothing to over think lol
Overthinking and anxiety kicking in for something kinda new I see
I thank them and the store that compliment in my compliment folder in my brain cause I compliments aren't that common in my life so I cherish every small ones. I also try and show appreciation to them later on.
A simple “thank you” suffices in most circumstances.
Just smile, say thank you, and possibly return the favor.
Act collected and say something that comes off as humble
Awkward for me. I shy away. Change the subject. Or start talking about them. I don’t feel deserving.
I nod, smile and say thanks a bunch. They went out of their way to compliment me, which I certainly appreciate. I don't expect compliments, so getting any is a bit of a shocker to me.
"thanks, i appreciate it" and maybe give a compliment back.
As a guy I don’t get compliments often so when I do, it’s usually responded either to personally or way more casual
Alternatives I use are, “I admire your appreciation”, “your gratitude is acknowledged”, and….. that’s all
First, make sure it's a compliment and not a rub.
Second, if the former, be gracious and thankful.
Depends. Have it as three step process may be. Listen, take a quick pause decide how you feel to respond then respond
No one ever complimented me, so I have no idea what to say, if that ever happens.
Usually either reciprocate or thank them, try to be genuine. Smiling helps.
I say thank you and compliment them back out of kindness
Honestly same xD, sometimes ill say thanks and try to brush passed a little and try not to be rude, because i just am so awkward lol.
Saying thank you is fine. If a lady has a nice new hair style, I say something nice like I like your hair. I don't expect anything but thanks
I don't get them often either, I just say thanks.
your response sounds genuine and honest... so it's perfect
Honestly I either have a disbelieve reaction an awkward ok. Or thanks you.
I don't know how your supposed to take them either but well it's compounded by the fact I don't believe any of them.
I just say thank you and feel good about it.
Thank you, don't worry if it's awkward, it can be kinda cute when you're a girl.
I'm awkward when receiving compliments but I still appreciate them.
If I find her attractive, I get a boner, smile, and say thank you.
I usually masterbate and repeat the compliments while doing it.
I thank someone I don't know well, but deny it if it's my mom or something. My family is super biased.
if its a stranger they can fuck off and be quiet. You don't know me so shut up and go away! If its someone I know It would depend
i don't know it's very rare and far few in between times i get compliments
