Why do people say they feel humbled, when they receive admiration and praise?

The definition of humbled is: lower (someone) in dignity or importance.
"I knew he had humbled himself to ask for my help". The word "humbled" is also used to refer to an opponent who has been defeated.

I hear speeches from successful people who have a deep and positive effect on people, and they'll often say they feel humbled.

It's much more humbling failing at something one is passionate about. Why do successful people often say they feel humbled when they receive praise?
