Guess the Country - starts with "M"?

Question

This is another in a series of geography questions. Each question will contain several things about a country and the goal is to guess what country that is. We'll try to go through the alphabet in order, and have a new question each day.

Things about this country:

* Its name starts with the letter "M"

* It was formerly a French colony

* It's twice the size of the UK

* Its flag has red white and green colors

* It has 2 official languages

* It's a very poor country; most people survive on US$2 per day

* It's the only place where lemurs and hissing cockroaches are found natively

* It's sometimes called the "8th Continent" because of its flora and fauna diversity

* Its name can be found in the titles of two animated movies

* Its athletes have won zero Olympic medals through 2022

The correct answer is Madagascar.

Some details on the items:
Malagasy and French are official languages
There have actually been four Madagascar animated movies

I'm gonna guess Mozambique. I don't know if it was a French colony or not. The size seems reasonable. Other than that I'm too lazy to think of other countries.

Another possibility is Burma which changed names to an M name but I'm not going to attempt to spell it because I still think of it as Burma. I can't remember all these name changes, splitting countries, combining countries. There's probably a couple of dozen of them since I learned geography.

The only M countries I remember are Mexico and Morocco. But because you called it a "Continent," it's clearly  Madagascar . Also, the animated movies clue, as well. This one was too easy given the clues.

I have no idea, but I will guess Malta. I only know a few countries with M, Mauritania, Malta, Madagascar, Maldives, Malaysia, Macedonia... but I dont know about them. My brother would know the flag colors. He's a flag nut and can tell which country flags have which colors, but he's not here, so alas.

I would say the island of Madagascar, due to its size and I can see it being called an "8th continent". (Although I've never heard it called that.) Not sure how poor it is or if it was formerly a French colony.

Madagascar? Hissing cockroaches made me think Malaysia. Because when I think Malaysia I think cockroaches. But I don't think there's an animated movie called Malaysia.🤣
