Why would my bank not allow me to use my card?

I got paid today but when I went to use it nothing worked, I couldn’t pay for anything. I don’t have any overdraft, haven’t changed anything and overall haven’t used my card in over a month. I started a new job 3 weeks ago and I felt like I wasn’t going to get paid but the money is there. I just can’t use it. It’s at the worst time possible too as I had plans to take my boyfriend on a date tomorrow and dinner is going to cost $110 and I have a vet appointment for my cat and dog this upcoming week that I’m worried I won’t be able to pay for now. My bank opens Monday so I’ll be going after work but any idea what it could be?

The credit card company's computer probably saw a questionable charge on your card and locked the account. You shouldn't have to go to the bank to resolve it. Call the customer service number on the back of the card.

Hint: It's usually a good idea to have two credit cards, just in case one of them gets compromised.

It’s not a credit card and I haven’t purchased anything in a month or so cuz I haven’t had money

Call your 24 hour card support and see if they can start putting in notes that its you and watch your bank like panic fix things when they start getting yelled at by the credit card company... Its funny when you explain the bank is screwing with what should be the like credit card companies best intrest. Banks start like floundering when that happens.

As to what is not allowing you to use your card could be there was a transaction that didn't make sense for you and its flagged. :/

Faulty card? My card works but ever since the damn gas stations messed with the pumps, it tells me my card is denied. Then I have to run inside to pay other than that my card works fine. They could if cut it off or have it on hold etc. I'm sure they'll give you a new card.

If you just got paid, and especially if this was the first transfer from that account into yours, it's not unusual for the bank to hold it for 1 business day. You'll probably find that after 3-5 payments, they will start making the money available the same day.

I know it sucks, but it's for everyone's protection.

The main reason I would think of (and that's not to say there might be something going on at your particular bank and/or with your particular card): At our bank, there is usually a time lag between the time of the transfer, and the time it posts to your account/cash card, etc. The bank is "playing the float", and gets a couple extra days of an interest-free "loan" since they have your money before they have to post it to your account.

As others said, probably a pend on the direct deposit. This will happen if your bank is different from the paying bank. Even when my clients who've paid me 100 times do a DD, there is a lag till the beginning of the next business day.

The pay check could be pending on your account and so you might not have access to the money until it goes through completely

It’s not tho I’m actively able to transfer the money between my savings and checking account

I'm sorry I know that most cards have a customer service number on the back of them that you can call 24/7 if you have any issues. I hope you get everything straightened out soon.
