In the US, the yellow line shows the side of the road, and the white line shows that traffic on the other side of the road shroud be traveling in a direction facing you, going "the other way" Since driving in the US is on the right, the yellow line should always be on your right and the white line on your left.

Surprisingly, or maybe not considering the number of wrong-way crashes that happen in the US, no one got this right.
