Does oxygen need to exist for a living organism to exist?

Is it possible in general for a living thing to not need oxygen to live? Not exclusively Earth creatures, just in general

as many already pointed out... there are anaerobic creatures, which are usually a one, single-cell organism that do not require oxygen to live, instead... they get their energy from sulfates or nitrates? but they very VERY simple

now, there are two other way more complex creatures which are multicellular but!! they do seem to thrive without the direct need for oxygen or, they do not have the *throws the mitochondria powerhouse of the cell meme* and you might want to check them out (I included the links to details)

You pose a WONDERFUL question

because let’s look at this for a minute…

there isn’t ANY oxygen in OUTER SPACE.

and to put that in perspective and simple terms: that is very vast and wide/ expansive.

So out of the Big Bang, came all of this matter, energy, gases, and light.

Yet, oxygen has only been found on-

to scale this is even as an understatement-

found on a spec, compared to the grand scheme of expanding outward, as visualized with the aid of:

Hubble’s law and the 2nd law of thermodynamics, contextualizing entropy.

Great question, and it carries a weight to it. Yes, I’ll say it- scarcity as a basic underlier, but that can easily be resolved by chemical/element construction. Shouldn’t be the goal, but not all would be lost.

So there is this person named Quazden. He is friends with another kind of people called Maknights. They can make portals to other worlds as long as the portal looks like the other planet. They can’t make them on their own so Quazden goes there himself which means he would be in space for hours and is fine. (He is not from Earth and is not related to it at all). I was wondering if it’s possible for him to be fine

I think you’d need to have two different questions one that’s scientifical and the other one being somewhat sci-fi logical.

I think only a fan of them or the writer/ creator of these characters would be able to describe their personal limits and such.

Both are really interesting, and love how sci-fi material can inspire great innovations and questions in the science world, like the one you posted here.

Depending, but yes if the human body can't doesn't have oxygen it doesn't work properly.

Only carbon based life requires oxygen. There is a possibility of sulphur or silicon based life but their chemistry would be very different and not dependant on oxygen so much.

Depends if the organism is from this planet or not, I think most organisms need oxygen but I wouldn't be surprised if not all of them did.

There's only so much the human mind knows but it's most likely inaccurate to say all organisms in the universe need oxygen when there's probably forms of bacteria that don't need oxygen cause maybe they need nitrogen? Example of course

No. There are many anaerobic organisms. But water is a necessity.
