My dog is dying… What can I do to make him comfortable and to make his passing easy?

Pretty sure this is his last night… He laid down in the kitchen and hasn’t moved. His gums are cold as ice and pale and has very labored breathing. We made him a pallet in the floor and I’m sitting with him right now and giving him pets… My dad says if he makes it through the night we’ll take him to the vet to be put down..

I went through the same with my Luna dog... I wasn't home that day, and there was not much vets could do, she was already out of energy but she held into dear life, till I arrived... as soon as I got there, I took her onto my lap and then I just never left her side I just held her and I did pet her and reassured her that it was going to be alright, that I was going to be alright (I really think she was just waiting for me, and because those times were definitely not easy for me, she was always looking out for me, especially when I was feeling down always) so I tried my absolute best to make her feel reassured and calm... they can always sense our stress and our feelings, mood and all that

and she tried her best to wag her tail, and did a little bit, and her eyes kept looking at me, which was very difficult for me, but I had to keep smiling to her, not a fake one... a genuinely thankful one because well, she was always the absolute best so that, comfort and those words of love till the very last of her minutes, I did manage or she did manage to relax and close her eyes as I told her that it was okay to rest and relax, so she did and after that it was a matter of seconds when her heart stopped

I would think that's the best you could do at this point, or at least that is the best I could... and nowadays I see it as a bittersweet memory, try your best to give your dog all that love, and all that reassurance, the comfort any soothing, as difficult as it sounds, try to convey all that positive and that great and happiness and love they always give, should be given till our very last moments here on this earth...

You have to look at the pain How deep the pain is how hard it is to get around I mean look at it as if it was you would you want to be put to sleep would you want to go through all of that when time is that time is up and you'll know it and for me anyway I would have the dog put down that's not Humane that's doing the right thing just so they don't go through the pain they can't speak like weekend they can kind of show you but they can't tell you it's a hard thing to do but I mean if you have to do it you have to do it and you got to hold your head high because you know for sure that you would not want to go through that so why would you let that animal that pet that part of your family goes through it

My dad took him to the vet and put him down the morning after I posted this. 😔 It still feels odd not having him begging at the table for scraps lol…

Your company is the best and only thing you can do for your pet. If your parents or you have any medication on hand that lessens pain or anxiety in humans, you might be able to cut the dosage to the body weight of pet and dissolve it in some water if the animal is able to drink any water.

But if the pet is no longer eating or interested in imbibing anything, and you don't have any such medications, the only over the counter item I can think of that makes people sleepy is benedryl. Aspirin might help with pain. Call your vet and see if they suggest any OTC meds or human meds that could work to ease your pet's death.

Talk to your pet gently and stroke it. Be the friend it's always known and loved.

If he has a tag on a collar- make it a necklace. Maybe take his paw after he’s passed and press it in some ink and press it on a piece of paper and write a letter to yourself with words you think he would’ve said to you, if he wasn’t in that compromised state.

Remember only the good memories- his life and YOUR LIFE are too precious to remember and hold on to any negative emotions.

Don’t look back and have a memory you can cry about. Instead. Make sure it ends on a good note. Always let him leave on a good note, so you can have better memories of him. Better memories of you both together 😊👐

It's so hard to go through that.

While holding and/or petting him, constantly tell your pal that you truly appreciate his loyalty and all the love he shared with you.

Typically, dogs are smart and feel love & emotion.

You may witness them give you a look of "farewell" and/or they'll wag their tail to let you know they understood every sincere word you said.

Your buddy needs those comfort gestures.

I truly hope he passes as painlessly as possible.

My dog had to be put down years ago cause of old age. He was in pain as he was old with arthritis and an outside dog. I didn't go but my mom, dad and brother went and saw him be put to sleep. I have Yorkshire Terrier/Shih Tzu mix and he's already 12 years old. I can't imagine him passing away as it would be hard as he sleeps under the bed and makes pig noises. He always barks when the smoke alarm goes off. I would take your dog's collar and save it as a memory especially with dog tags.

Just stay by his side. Make sure it is comfortable for him. The companionship is very important so the moment he lets go, the last thing he has was you. I'm really sorry

Just be with him. He needs to be with family. Even if you have to sleep next to him, don't let him be alone.

There's no need to put your pet down unless they are clearly in distress. Just visiting the vet can be stressful.

Some vets will make house calls to put pets to sleep so it isn't so stressful on the pet or its people.

Stay with him. Their owner's scent and their owner's voice is very comforting to them. I've been through it many times. It helps.
