It comes as a shock how holidays still get twisted and misappropriated. I dont know about you all but Im going to prepare a feast in honor of St. Valentine.
Nobody actually knows. As with many holidays, festivals and rituals, even before capitalism and consumerism corrupted it further, overlapping ideologies and belief systems turned it into an amalgamation of sorts.

I'd guess it was a pegan holiday at one point but just evolved into what it is today
