Valentine's Day, which is known as the "feast of lovers," has been celebrated since Roman times. It started in 496 AD, when Pope Gelasius I wanted to stop the lupercalia, which were ancient pagan rituals honouring the fertility god Luperco. Luperco was an old Latin god of nature. Lupercus, the god of nature and fertility, helps the she-wolf take care of Romulus and Remus. The ancient Romans thought that the lupercalia made women more likely to get pregnant, so it was known as the "feast of lovers."
On February 15, they held these ceremonies, which were full of wild celebrations and went against Christian morals and the idea of love.
In particular, some old fertility rituals said that the women of Rome would be hit in the streets by groups of young men who were naked and carrying bundles of branches tied together with string. By whipping these men, who had been "regressed" to the ancestral and divine state of free sexuality by the rural god Fauno-Luperco, the women got a blessing that made them more likely to have children.

All stories about saints named Valentine that were written after their deaths, such as those by Geoffrey Chaucer, mention Valentine of Genoa.
