What I learned is that a fast car has a place, but that place is largely not the cities and suburbs. There is too much traffic unless you are in state like Nevada, Montana, or Wyoming. Really fast cars are also uncomfortable, loud, ride rough, and are easily broken by the poor state of the roads. They are nice to look at, but living with them comes at a pretty high cost, among those being a lot of downtime and expensive repairs.
For daily use, most such cars are miserable. If you can afford a separate car for the track, or for car rallies or whatever, great, but for your daily driver, you will want something more sensible, especially if you plan to travel with more than just a single person or as a couple. With any super car, you will only have space for a single medium-sized duffel bag for luggage.
And cars like Mustangs and Cameros aren't really that fast unless they are also expensive, like the GT350/GT500, and then you have most of the same problems of cost, harsh ride, expensive maintenance, loudness, and so on. Fun on the occasional weekend but tedious every day.31 Reply- +1 y

Kids built model cars.
Customized cars and hot rods were popular.
https://www.motortrend.com/news/the-kings-of-late-custom-car-golden-age/
There were songs about cars - Hot Rod Lincoln, Rocket 88, Little Deuce Coup, 409, Drag City, GTO, Hey Little Cobra, Fun Fun Fun, Little Old Lady from Pasadena, Highway Star, I Can't Drive 55, ...
Foreign sports cars weren't much of a thing yet. People were into muscle cars.
So I was into fast cars when I was young. I had a car from the time I first got my license when I turned 16. My parents bought me my first one - nothing fancy. A couple years later, my dad handed me down his '63 Buick Le Sabre two door hard top with a 401 V8. I christened it the Bismarck. It was a great car.
In my 20s, I bought a customized '72 El Camino with a 327 small block that was bored out to 350. It had RV cams, a customized trans and rear end, a Hearst shifter, fat tires and air shocks in back to raise the rear end up. It made me so happy. I thought I was Johnny Race and I was a good driver, too.
Purely by chance, when I was 26, I became a motor vehicle damage field adjuster/appraiser. After years of that, I lost my fascination with expensive sports cars. A car was a car as far as I was concerned. I don't give one fuck about people who have more money than they know what to do with and their expensive cars. It's all commercialism and conspicuous consumerism.
Now I prefer cars with all the bells and whistles and comforts, that are dependable and perform well. But I'm not impressed by speed or 500 horse power.

+1 ySpeed ALONE, tends to be equated by those young as being 'powerful'.
The reckless sensation of velocity is intoxicating.
IF ONE SURVIVES long enough to 'mature'...
One Further along, in addition to achieving control... One learns to budget Velocity
and by its mastery, develops the discernment to earnestly master 'precision'. within the limitations of One's vehicle. Performance Driving Schools TEACH this.
BOTH Drag Racing AND AutoCross employ speed.
One, with greater Operator judgement than the other's mere mechanical prowess.
Its the difference between BEING a 'dumb' projectile and the enviable skillset of a barn swallow's darting virtuosity. From point 'a' to 'b' ... but also conquering circumventing impeding obstacles. The real world 'Gumball Rally' is known as 'One Lap of America'~10 Reply 411 opinions shared on Other topic. Yeah, but they don't necessarily have to be fast. I like classic cars with some character more. I have one of each to scratch those two itches. The 2010 Hennessey Camaro is legitimately fast and fun to drive. Motor Trend ran the quarter mile in the 11's with it on street tires, and broke into the 10's with drag radials. I don't drive that car a lot though, because it's still basically brand new, I just flipped it through the 10,000 mile mark on the odometer last time I had it out. But you can't really blast around at will, at least not in the suburbs.
I actually enjoy the old 69 Camaro in the summer more. Yeah, it's comparatively slow, but the old mark IV 396 big block plays the music of my people. It's a whole different feel with manual steering, manual drum brakes, and a transmission & rear end combo that will lay rubber all over the place, but doesn't like to cruise at much over 60mph. When it's nice out, that's the one I prefer to drive daily.

+1 yI have not been in too many fast cars, been in ones with quick acceleration but they usually followed the speed limit. My uncle likes to speed so he can spend less time on the road and he has extremely good driving skills so has basically no accident risk but he’s been fined for speeding by electronic meters.

+1 yNo, because they are high maintenance. I like a light, moderately expensive car with good security and above-average built quality. That maintains a fine balance between my wallet and its maintenance costs.
We actually have such a car. It is Hyundai Creata. She is cool.

20 Reply I don’t, to get a fast car you lost the luxury and comfort inside its interior.
I rather drive comfortable than drive a fast car that I can’t even peddle to its limit.
