The alkaloid, the chemical stuff, which has the pain killing effect, exists in some form in Opium, as well in Morphine once you extracted it.

Its two different types of drugs, both having the same pain killing chemical compound in them.

One is fairly easy extracted from a natural growing plant, one takes insane amount of knowledge and expensive equipment to extract and refine.

And weed is even more simple you just dry the stuff and burn it.
