Do hurricanes worry you?

They worry me because I live in a place (SoCal) where we almost never get things like this so they are a bit frightening before they happen. When they do happen they turn out to be mostly just rainstorms.

I am sitting inside in Hurricane "Hilary" right now listening to the gentle rain that is just now stopping. It has taken the edge off the heat here which is nice.

It could be far far worse.

Ok, I get that the tropical storm we are having here is not much to worry about.

We had a 5.5 Earthquake today which for California is not much, but I have lived through ones approaching 9 which are absolutely terrifying and dangerous as hell.

We also have absolutely tremendous brush fires here which burn thousands of acres and destroy many homes and kill firefighters. Again, terrifying and dangerous as hell.

I live in northeast Florida. We have frequent near misses with hurricanes that pass by offshore. The last two direct hits by hurricanes in our area were in 1898 and 1964. I always take hurricanes seriously and have supplies on hand to last through a week of being without power, plus I have an evacuation destination, about 300 miles away, open to me at all times. I am prepared, so I don't worry.

Spending much of my life in the Carolinas I have whethered quite a few category 4s and 5s. 5s ae terrifying, 4s are if they stick around becaues that waterlogged soil means trees are coming down and roads are washing out/away/down the hill. Cat 3s didn't really change much for us unless they were super slow moving. Cat 2s we'd have hurricane parties on the roof of our brick building and cat 1s we just made sure that we were stocked up on food/ice in case the power went out. The real worry was any tornadoes that got kicked up from the large ones. I've had to outrun 2 tornadoes before, which you can't actually do in a straight line (they're faster) and the roads don't go that way anyway. One we just gave up on avoiding and tied on to a highway overpass as it went over us (mom and me). Dropped vehicles on both sides of the overpass. The other time I was on a spur road with jack shite around, so took it at waaay too fast a speed back to the highway to haul ass out of there on flat 6-lane which was fortunately deserted. Those were way more frightening.

Then I go and buy a house in tornado alley...

In my country we don’t have them.

In China we have loads of them.

When I came here there were category 4 typhoons and thankfully they didn’t hit directly to Shanghai or its surroundings but they did a great damage to other places.

I’ve seen Hillary is category 2 hurricane, it’s important to stay home and take the precautions and don’t worry. Everything will be alright.

That being said my country can get quite windy every March and we have winds reaching 80 km/h and I have been fine walking in them even as a teen.

So Chinese typhoons seemed like a game, I do still stay home though, whenever there’s an alert

As for Earthquakes, Georgia has lots of them. I am used to them. I was in Bali when there was a 6.5 earthquake and a Tsunami alert. I went far from the beach but thankfully tsunami didn’t happen.

Yep, they can be terrifying and dangerous.

About a 3 weeks ago, we had typhoon Doksuri here in Shanghai.

Thankfully it was already weakened by the landfall in other areas beforehand. But it did a horrible damage once it arrived to Beijing and caused enormous flooding.

So, yep. They can be very dangerous and it’s always better to take precautions.

But as you are in it right now, I’d suggest just open a movie and try to enjoy a rainy day at home.

I was in the Philippines when Category 5 Super Typhoon 'Haiyan' battered the archipelago with nearly 200 mph (300 kph) winds and 3 days of torrential downpour that left the nation with well over 6,000 fatalities and nearly 2,000 people still missing.

Now living back here in California, I can confidently say I'm not afraid of weak (Category 1 & 2) hurricanes but I will never take them lightly.

My husband & I are ready & willing to lend a helping hand in relief efforts just like we did for days during and after Haiyan and other calamities devastated the Philippines.

Hurricanes worry me if they especially hit New Jersey and swing into Southwestern Pennsylvania, because this part of PA is part of Washington County we live in. When Hurricane Sandy came we had high winds, and it was knocking around the garbage cans and I live in a neighborhood where houses are close together. So if my garbage cans go over this hillside part of my yard there is no way I can go down because I am a fall risk and I already fell once over the hillside like 6- months ago when high winds were predicted so no more of that stuff because the neighbors are not too friendly around here and every little thing they want to call the City on people.

Yes I do as you know I live in Miami Florida and I’m by myself now alone in my house and I have no homeowners insurance it’s a rip off and I’ve gotta pay the first $2500. Anyway and I have a wood fence in my backyard. I cannot afford any problems here or roof problems or anything else

Nope, I live in the Midwest. We don't get hurricanes we get tornadoes. And not to minimize the effects of hurricanes. But at least you get days advanced warning that they are coming, to evacuate if you wish. With a tornado you're lucky to get even minutes advanced warning.

I live near coast here in Texas. You're being lucky right now. Winds can get up 150+ mph if it gets to hurricane strength. Tornadoes can happen. But since its a lot of rain, your chance of flooding goes way up.

I went through several hurricanes as a kid and I always LOVED them... I have flown through portions of hurricanes as an aviator, and enjoyed the nervous excitement of jousting with mother nature (had WX RADAR, strike finder, anti-ice, etc).

I’ve been in some hurricanes, fortunately nothing devastating. Mostly a lot of work getting things battened down beforehand and cleaning up afterward, and the lack of electricity is never fun. I wouldn’t want to ride out a cat 3-5 storm.

I do not even know how it would be to brush off a 5.5.

Oh, and I watched something about something in Yellowstone is totally going to break loose one day because of earthquakes. Not an if but when type of situation and it will be some huge catastrophe or whatever.
