One year, I went dressed as the dirty old man on "Laugh-In".
I guess I was about 13. Every time I went to a house, either before I got to the steps (if they were sitting on the porch) or as I was leaving, I'd walk just like him with the walking stick and stick it into the ground and keep walking without it for a few steps as if I didn't realize it was missing, then go back for it. No idea if anybody saw that as I was leaving or thought it was funny but, oh well, I still did it.
Back in the `60's, after trick or treating, we'd all go over to what used to be the high school about a mile from my house and watch local magician, Harry Albacher do a show for us. From the mid `70's onwards, we'd all go over to the boro building (3 blocks from my house) and there'd be a dance in the street and they'd have kids of each age group parade around in their costumes and they'd hand out prizes ($5.00, I think) for the 3 best costumes in each age group. From the `80's onwards, my neighbor was the DJ and would dress up like Elvis Presley. This Halloween will be the last appearance of Elvis.
And, from the early `80's `til about the late 80's, this woman across the street from me, who was the singer in a local rock band, would use her band's P. A. gear and lights to make the inside of her place into a haunted house where she'd cackle like a witch over the P. A. and there'd be flashing lights and Halloween music and she'd invite all the kids to come in and get their candy. Then. one year, one of her band mates knocked her up and she found god and quit the band and would no longer even stay home for Halloween! She'd take her daughter to some weird church a few dozen miles away that night to spend the whole night praying!
And, a friend of the family who cuts tree for a living, would always get the hugest pumpkin he could find and set it on his front porch and when people came to see it, they'd leave donations for some kind of charity he was supporting. Almost every year, he'd be in the local papers and on t. v. because of the pumpkin.
Nice!
My brother and a friend from school were in my neighborhood. We were going up to a house to get candy. The guy was sitting by the back door with a bowl of candy in his lap. As we approached the house there were some older kids in the street and they threw eggs at the door. The guy thought that we did it and he sprung out of his chair and bolted down the stairs. We got freaked out and started running. He was a pretty fat guy but he ran pretty good. Ae ran down the street and he was right behind us yelling that he was going to get one of us. My house was at the end of the street. The three of us ran into the back yard and ran into the woods. He ran into the backyard and there was 4 foot retaining wall that my father had built. We ll knew it was there and just jumped off it. He ran off the end of the wall and fell. I heard him hit the ground and as we ran into the woods we could hear him yelling. It was scary at the time because this guy was nuts but now it is really funny.
