I'm guessing this was part of a rewards program - which, make no mistake, are REALLY a MARKETING program - just one where you, the customer, ALSO get some value for what they are taking from you.

Your DOB gives them your age, which gives them demographic information that they can both use to help market to you more effectively, AND which they can sell to third parties so that those third parties can ALSO market to you more effectively.
