It's really annoying, especially since those who use it tend to not provide any information on those alleged "studies", and just expect you to take their word for it.

Like, I have a bachelor’s of science degree, and I needed to write a lot of research papers.


I’ve learned how to use proper citation, to cite research, and it’s not that hard.


And if it’s not a formal paper, it’s even easier.


They literally just need to find the study and drop the link at the bottom of their article or post.

And then the reader can review the study to see if the study was conducted properly (since they need to describe the whole procedure), who funded the study (since certain investors try to promote biased results), and whether or not the results were statistically significant (e. g. if the sample size is too small, the study can be deemed inconclusive).


When they just say “studies show” it shows that they didn’t do their homework.


I’ve had this happen before where I made a point while also citing peer-reviewed studies. Then someone kept arguing against me and said they could find studies too. I told them to please go ahead because I would genuinely be interested in reviewing the studies. Then later it turned out they didn’t have any studies they could pull up and they admitted that their stance was because of their own personal anecdotal experience. If that’s the case they should of just said “from my experience” instead of saying “studies show” without ever actually finding the studies.

I can't stand hearing that. I mean, if you can cite at least two or three, then I'm more likely to take it seriously. In general though, I'm skeptical.

Its often used to make bullshit sound legit. If you really want to quote a study you can easily just show the study abstract as quote.

I mean you actually can use it in a legit way to summarize different studies showing similar results, but then tell us the specific studies.

Yes, "settled science". That's another expression I loathe! It's used to pre-empt dissent, disagreement.
