The guy that gives free cellphones at a kiosk asked for the last four numbers of my social security number. Do you think it's safe?

I can't get a new phone without giving the last four digits of my social security number to get a free cellphone. I'm already showing my driver's license and proof of income. 🤨Why do they need SS numbers too? These kiosks are set up outside in store parking lots. My phone is broken and I don't have the money to buy a cellphone 🤷🏼‍♀️.

The last four digits are often used to verify a user at financial institutions. It's used to verify YOU, not someone else. You should not give out that info to anyone who does not have a good reason to have it - for example employers and banks.

Nobody else has any business having that number. It can be combined with other info to steal your identity or hack your accounts. This is why privacy on the Internet is such a big deal. Little pieces of information might seem meaningless, but when combined with other info becomes very meaningful.

They are set up out in a parking lot? Your kidding right? Not a chance I would get a phone from some guy set up in a parking lot free or otherwise. No way I would give that info out. There is no need for this info to get a new anything. I would go somewhere else for a new phone. If I couldn't afford a new phone do without.

I looked on the internet and the only State that doesn't ask for the 4 digits or the entire number is Rhode Island. But I don't live in Rhode Island.
They have signs up at these kiosks that say "Free cellphone - do ID required".
If I don't give them my 4 digits then I don't get the phone. Help!!!

Sounds a tad dodgy but, I don't see what he can do with the last 4. I don't see why anybody even needs a phone. Especially if you've already got one. All they are is tracking devices. Just like if you were a cow and had one of those tags attached to your ear.

I would definitely not do that. There is probably a reason why they are in the parking lot and not on the inside. I’ve never had to give my social security for anything like that.
