There haven't been any answers on how to end homelessness just like they can't even find a cure for the common cold. They could, but they haven't.

I used to volunteer weekly for the homeless. I probably spent well over 300+ hours of my time and thousands in donations trying to make a difference.

But one day I rode my bike downtown of where I used to help out and I saw tents on public spaces and I became completely disillusioned. I lived in that area for 10 years prior and never once saw a tent propped up around there. It dawned on my that the local far left political policies were incentivizing that bs. That’s when I quit volunteering in that capacity. I still donate money and volunteer for other charitable causes. I am also willing to spend tax money on:

Involuntary commitment to psychiatric care facilities for the homeless who are a threat to others and themselves.
Involuntary commitment to drug rehab facilities for the homeless. Fentanyl addiction has skyrocketed in my local city and the only way you can treat these people is you need to lock them up for a while while they manage their withdraws (while giving them drug/psychiatric treatment to help them).
Ending no cash bails for repeat violent criminals

Many leftists have this bizarre and asinine notion that just letting the homeless roam free on the streets is “good for society”. Like it’s “oppression” to do what I listed above. Ah you are not helping a severe drug addiction and/or psychotic person by letting them “roam free”.

The damage and crime they cause actually causes taxpayers more in money vs. involuntarily committing them. This is even true of repeat criminals. If they keep getting letting free from jail and/or prison that incentivizes to keep living that criminal life.

Now there is a small percentage of homeless who are truly down on their luck. Those people usually don’t stay homeless long but I don’t mind for a second helping those people out. There is a difference between a hand up vs. a hand out.

We had this problem largely under control until dumb shit Ronald Reagan emptied the publicly-funded insane asylums onto the streets and then it was made worse by shit leftards on the West Coast who decided that progress meant having people camp out and defecate on the sidewalk while stealing shit and getting high.

California likes to boast about how much money they spend on addressing homelessness but most of those billions gets pocketed by criminal nonprofits. What little they can get built is way over priced, with a single outdoor toilet in San Francisco costing seven figures. Even if they could build housing for these people they would inevitably trash it because contrary to what the leftards claim most of them aren't good decent people who are just down on their luck but deranged madmen, drug addicts, and criminals.

The only way to solve this problem is to do what used to do and put them back into asylums if they are crazy or jail if they are just piece of shit criminals.

I think a town, city, state, all can make positive changes, but disappear, unlikely. In recent years, especially post Covid, the problem of homelessness has exploded in my city. I watched a documentary about the problem out in California and how residents are sometimes violently clashing with those making camps and literally burning down their properties and all the "solution makers" seemed to do is spin their wheels---can't legally remove them off public sidewalks, can't bus them out, can't do much, you have to live with it. Year 2, 3, 4 problem worse.

I love the idea of what Austin, TX has done with their Community First Village. It's a communal area with dozens of tiny homes built by its residents who were all once living with chronic homelessness. They must have a job or work at the property, they must help build their future tiny home, they cannot be sex offenders, bring drugs onto the property, and must commit to the program. As successful as it has been, they can only cater to so many people and only have so much land. It's a start though.

Homeless people are PEOPLE first, without a home second. Those that want to be dismissive and say that's someone else's problem, well, ask Californian's who's problem it is now. We can't just hope the problems will go away. A city and it's people need to address the issues of why and how the problems are getting worse and stem the leak. Veteran care, mental health care, lack of employment, drug use, LGBTGI+ youth being kicked out of their homes/running away, women trying to escape violent relationships, and migrants without agency in country or home. With any problem, you work it one piece at a time and it may not be about winning and solving it, but if you can get 20 more people today off the streets, that's a win, and the next month, 20 more, and go from there.

Unfortunately, there are people that are homeless by choice. They may not be out in public living in tents on the streets & in your face. Some couch surf from one family member or friend to another or relationship to relationship. I dated a man like that. From age 18-53 he always had a family, friend or girlfriend he lived with, had short term random jobs because whomever he lived with gave him $ & food & he'd often drive their cars. He's definitely an opportunist & pulled the heart strings. Wasn't until he turned 54 that he actually HAD to get his own place & be self sufficient.

Some homeless people pan handle & make more than I do working a 40 hour work week. They don't mind living out there "free". Some get in trouble with the law in the winter & go to jail so they have a warm bed & 3 meals a day during the cold weather. Facts.

Some people are homeless because they have mental health issues & were in a facility & the facility got closed down & there's no next of kin available, so they're turned out to the streets & don't have the skills to make it.

Some people are homeless because they just can't get ahead or ontop of their finances & lose everything.

Some people are homeless because they were incarcerated & have no one they can stay with upon their release & their county doesn't offer help with housing, so their stuck.

Isn't it interesting that in a country like Thailand , there is basically no homelessness , or very very little , yet we in the West have these massive homeless communities , living life in constant danger ( often from each other ) , and for the most part , but not all , its about substance abuse.

Sadly , I think it will go on forever , my ex boss in Victoria Australia , is now doing a business ( N4P ) to assist homeless people in Melbourne , he's been going for 7 years , and has barely had an impact. We , for the most part , simply dont care , and Getto's just become Getto's , no matter how they start , I dont have the answer , very sad.

The only cures for homelessness are:

- Getting rid of billionaires by taxing the shit out of them

- Use their money to invest in welfare, universal health care and mental health programs

- Re-regulate banking and finance as it was before Reagan to eliminate the ultra-rich and build a larger middle class

- Provide quality education for everyone who wants access to it

In other words, "socialism", in the eyes of the dipshit republican who votes for tax cuts and thinks that he can just jail or shoot the country's problems away.

There are plenty of good answers to the question of how to end homelessness. The problem is, no liberal wants to implement them.

Something like the CCC, which worked great in the past, would hep these people get off drugs and alcohol and give them something to live for and a reason to feel good about themselves, and would help society getting them off the streets and making them productive members of society. But in today's liberal society, we have such low expectatins of people, that they feel they can have low expectations of themselves.

When I was in college, one of my required classes was in Product Design. A student came up with an instant pop-up home shell, kind of on the order of Christmas gift boxes that pop-up from a flattened state. The technology IS there, HAS been there, and it doesn't cost anywhere near what political hacks are trying to convince us that it should cost. The further "up the ladder" the costs and controls move, the more it is going to cost.

Even our relatively small church has a weekly Food Pantry open to anyone, where I work about 3-4 hours each week. It also maintains a benevolent fund to help with immediate needs of the destitute if the cause of their problem is from outside influences and NOT just a "personal choice" (just to milk the system).

Mostly it's a result of government regulations that make it extremely expensive to construct housing. Here in Seattle most of the city is zoned for single-family residences, so there is a very limited space where housing can be built. Additional regulations increase the base cost of offering any unit for rental, as the city has made it nearly impossible to evict a non-paying tenant. So what gets built? Apartments offered at $3000+/month, affordable only to people stable enough to produce the necessary income.

Well, the problem is mostly a massive mental health problem and a massive drug addition problem both of which are being handled VERY poorly. Especially in places like California. At some point once we focus on the drug and mental illness problems you'll have virtually all of your homeless problem solved.

But right now a bunch of clowns want to pretend that the issue of homelessness is "housing is too expensive." Of course if you spent 2 minutes walking down a street with a ton of homeless people, it's pretty obvious that's not the issue as everyone is either stoned out of their mind or a total schitzo.

Some people like the freedom of not being tied down and having no rules: Hobos, for example.

Some people refuse to get help with their addictions or mental illness and can't stay in a place without wreckig it or letting it go to pot.

I really don't care about the large majority of homeless people. They are almost always homeless because of their own choices in life.

People also need to understand that there is actually an appeal to being homeless. I know few people will understand that but it's true.

I can remember there being homeless around the little town where I live when I was a young girl. Forty years later there are more homeless then ever. In my opinion it is only going to continue to get worse.
