Have you ever interacted with somebody that has a life threatening disability?

Hi Moddy.
Yes. From the time I was old enough to go out and play, I was good friends with a kid my age who lived across the street. He contracted polio then got the polio vaccine. The polio didn't cripple him, but he came down with muscular dystrophy, possibly from either the polio or the vaccine.
We would go to each other's houses to play, but he eventually became wheel chair bound and gradually all his muscles deteriorated. I used to go to his house to hang out and play with him a lot until I reached my mid teens. He wasn't expected to live long but because of the loving care he received from his family, he lived to be just over 30.
One of my friends in high school had a younger brother who was deaf. When he was around, I'd acknowledge him and say "Hey. How's it going?" He could read lips. But I didn't know sign language and couldn't converse.
One of my best friends in high school contracted Parkinson's in his late 40s. He slowly deteriorated and passed away just a few years ago. We had stayed in touch ever since high school and I would visit him and his wife. Even after my wife and I moved out of the area, I would visit him when I was in town. The last time was a few years before he died, but we talked briefly on the phone a couple of times.
Even in his condition, he was still a really great guy with his old sense of humor.
hi! ☺️ im sorry about your friends they both seemed super nice 🥺 reading lips is helpful when im talking to people that dont know sign language to ☺️
Yes, helped someone multiple times who is suffering from a disease that is killing her slowly and unpredictably. Her body can deteriorate rapidly, or slowly. The rate fluctuates but any damage done is irreversible. So she is almost guaranteed to die from this, and the damage will keep stacking up. But she is still living her life to the fullest of her ability and actively training guidance dogs for people who have similar disabilities.
aww i feel bad for the lady 🥺 but its good that she's still living to the fullest ❤️ and yeah ☺️ think i could at least know a little bit even if its not like a sign sometimes people point or like make motions and i can kind of get what there saying
yeah that would be the best ☺️ thats why i like texting because its easy to talk to everyone to ❤️ but i bring my notebook to school so that everybody can write and talk to me to ☺️
I had an uncle that was deaf. We all took the time to learn sign language as we got older which helped tremendously in communicating with him. When we were kids and before we learned that he would talk to us. It was amazing that being deaf since childhood how well he spoke. I don’t think people understand how hard it is for people with hearing impairment to speak spoken language. It is almost like having a second disability. Unfortunately, he is no longer with us. A few years ago he passed away from cancer. The tough thing is that the cancer was in his throat so he couldn’t even speak to us anymore and once the cancer was advanced…signing was very difficult. It was hard to say goodbye to him because eyesight is one of the first things to go and hearing the last when you pass. He never had the hearing part.
awww im sorry 😞❤️🥺 your uncle seemed like a nice and sweet guy 🥺❤️ i know how hard it is to speak because when i read out loud i have to read really slow and i have to use the syllallbles to and sometimes i feel embrassed in class but im trying my best ❤️
I know how hard it is for you and him. It is very difficult so good for you for trying so hard for everyone in school. I am sure they all appreciate you doing that and support you. If not they can buzz off lol. He got really good at it so I am sure you will too. I am sure it is frustrating at times.
aww thanks ❤️☺️ my reading teacher says good job every time that i try so that makes me feel good to ☺️ some boys make jokes but i just try to ignore them
Nice to meet you.
Can you explain a life threatening disability?
Isn’t that something that would put your life at risk? I know American Sign but it’s not because I consider it a disability for those who cannot hear but because I wanted a way to interact with them without them feeling like they just learn to communicate with vocal language.
hi! ☺️ i think i mean life changing i think threatening is the wrong word after talking with some people to. thats really cool that you know American sign language ☺️❤️ sometimes i try to teach people a few signs but most of the time i just talk with them by writing or texting to because i know sign language is hard
I understand.
I think someone who is willing to learn can overcome sign being hard. It’s actually quite fun once you get the hang of it.
I think it’s nice to be able to switch off from the talking world sometimes.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy your time on GAG and welcome.

Being deaf isn't really a life threatening disability. My mother was born with a hearing impairment & went deaf at an early age. She was lucky though as she learned to talk before she went deaf. She lived a very full life & just passed away last Oct at the age of 88. There was 7 of us kids in the family.
aww sorry about your mom 🥺❤️ but thats good she had a full life ☺️
Thanks ❤️☺️ ill definitely try my best
Hi Moddy :) My sister is a certified ASL/English interpreter so we have a lot of Deaf friends :) I'm not as fluent as she is though.
Yes, I went to school with a boy who had duchenne muscular dystrophy. :(

Yes, I have had students with disabilities. A couple were in wheelchairs. It did not seem life threatening however.

Yes. A friends' mom has late stage Multiple Sclerosis.
Hi moddy. I actually met someone who signed and would help kids in school. Was wonderful to learn more about it and see how they didn’t need to hear to be a normal healthy teenager
yes, had a friend with those conditions several years ago, and treated him no differently as he wished
Why are the bottom two people included in this list?
Yes, more than once. One was my brother.
Yeah I have.
