What was your experience with buying a house?

My wife and I are in the process of buying a house. We closed on it yesterday. So far, it's been very smooth and simple for us. However, I've heard some horror stories of other people's buying and selling experience. If you own a home (or even a rental property), was your experience good or bad?

I had a good experience buying my first house. My second house was built for us. The builder created some issues but he fixed them finally. I bought a vacation house in 2009. Interest rates were going up. The bank that was writing the mortgage made me jump through a bunch of hoops and finally they rejected us. By the time I lined up another bank rates had gone up a full point. I almost walked away from the whole thing but my wife really wanted to do it. We finally closed about two months later.

if you made it through closing without any surprises, that seems like it would be the biggest hurdle. We bought our first house back in 2005, when bidding wars were very common. We did not get the first two or three, but got the fourth. When we sold that house and moved into our current home, the buyers of that house were skating on thin ice with their lender (down payment hiccups), but it came through, and all went well.

House was smaller and needed a lot of repairs and renovations. But it was comparatively cheap so that helped

All have been pretty smooth for me. I had a general idea of where i wanted to buy and what i needed in the house ahead of time though, and I've stuck with the same mortgage company so we're familiar with everything.

My friend my wife and I are looking to become first time home buyers soon... And the process is terrifying to me. And half of the process feels scammy.

Get with a lender who can work with you personally. One of my best friends out here in the Rocky Mountain region works for a lender that has individual offices in nearly every state if you want a reference to a lender that can hopefully simplify the process.
