Shrek 2 is 20 years old and has built up a massive nostalgic fanbase on top of being a box office breaking hit on release.
I love that this movie, even 20 years later, is getting this much love. I never would've thought in 2004 that 20 years later it would've been getting such a warm audience reception upon its return. It just felt right hearing the audience cheer for the cast at the end and after the end of Livin La Vida Loca.

When Shrek 2 first opened in theaters 20 years ago, the film grossed over $108 million its opening weekend. In total, it earned nearly a billion dollars worldwide.
They really don't make 'em like Shrek 2 anymore. The fact that it's a complete sell-out after 20 years tells you everything. Studios these days just wanna pump out boring remakes and sequels instead of really original stuff.
Shrek 2 worked so well cause it had heart. The characters felt like real friends you wanted to hang out with. And it was funny as heck without trying too hard. Movies now just feel soulless in comparison.
It's crazy to think that in 2004 it made like almost a billion dollars worldwide. That's insane money even by today's standards. And then 20 years later, people were still filling up theaters to see it again! That proves right there how much of a timeless classic it is.
Not a lot of movies can have that kind of longevity and appeal with new audiences. Shrek 2 is just on another level. If they ever do make Shrek 5, which I really hope happens now, it would for sure be another massive box office hit. The Shrek franchise is legendary.
