What kind of outdoor activities do you do?

I like to go hiking/herping which refers to searching for snakes, turtles, salamanders and frogs. I think there cute, like the little Blanding's Turtle in the photo which is a Threatened species. I also go birding, but it's mostly done by ear. I can recognize about 75 to 90 bird calls, often I hear birds (like the Least Bittern below) before I see them.

At work this week i heard one of those birds that can near perfectly mimic other sounds. I heard what sounded like a peculiar car alarm coming from somewhere there were no cars. Then it changed to a different kind of alarm sound. Then a siren, and finally a “natural” bird call.
I never did get a look at it. I’m not normally a bird nerd, but i would have peed myself to get a look at the bird doing its thing! When i saw a nature show on one of those species, i freaked out a little. It would be AWESOME to experience it first hand!

Sorry. I know that didn’t actually answer the question as asked. But that’s what came to mind as you wrote about birding and bird calls. Also, i didn’t really have anyone to share that with until this moment. Ell oh ell!

I miss hiking @charliefretz329 has tried to get me back into it. He enjoys it too.
One of my fav things to do, is ride deep into one of our many canyon rides, find a beautiful spot in nature, and read a good book.
There are several spots on a fire access road that I love. I have to be on guard though as there are lots of bears, mountain lion and other up there. Big scat often fresh in the road. I don't stop on those days and keep eye on my mirrors. It's a tricky, technical, tight, single-lane road and with adrenaline is so much fun.

I think your ability to identify bird calls are really unique! You could probably become an ornithologist (if you aren’t already haha).


I am more of a homebody, however, when I do spend extended periods outside, I’m more into something that gets my adrenaline pumping like rafting, kayaking, ziplining and just exploring in general. I also skateboard and rollerblade often.

I rescued a turtle yesterday from certain death. It was basking in the sun in the middle of a road. I can also recognize a lot of bird calls, but not as many as you. An American Bittern shows up every Spring in a nearby marsh, never heard a more bizarre call. Its nicknamed the slough pump bird, lol.

Neat... had to look that one up, I may have to look into one of those. I used to take the Scouting group on a 7 day canoe trip each year and used a tarp, sleeping bag and hammock. I was able to really drop my canoe pack weight, instead of taking a tent.

I like to be on the water. Either on my boat or a dive boat.

I was diving last year as part of a mussel survey within the Thames River in Ontario. We were looking for Endangered and Threatened mussels and other rare fish. Been awhile since I went diving for fun.

My family did the same thing, we would go for a fish, beach the boat on an island, hit the trails and go swimming all afternoon.
