What would you do if a neighbor's dog took a dump on your lawn and did not pick it up?

Question

I did not actually see him do it but I suspect it is this guy. I saw him this morning and he walks his two dogs without a leash and I saw one of the dogs pee in the yard across the street.

Dealing with that currently, not the lawn, but there’s a lower paved parking area at the street level (we’re kind of set on a bluff, and the front is all landscaped with a wall at the bottom.

So along that wall there’s enough room to park a couple of cars by the side of the street, but it’s usually empty. I live on a long road that’s pretty scenic in some spots and secluded in others, so it’s probably a popular place to joyride if you’re a teenager, and that usually means every other week I age to pick up beer cans and nips that kids tossed out the window.

There’s also a guy I’ve seen walking a big Doberman (and formerly a big German Shepherd too, which I assume died this past year), and now, every now and then, I find the dog has left something for me to hopefully not step in on the way to the mailbox. Kind of irritates me, but I am old enough to remember before the era of leash laws, so it’s been worse, and I try to remember that to keep it in perspective. But it does seem like a new custom to pick up after your dogs, which I endorse, and now get a little aggravated when people don’t, just based on not going with the flow of an understandable societal norm.

I’m also trying to remember to “not attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence”, haha. Odds are, this guy is thinking he’s walking the side of the street, we don’t even have sidewalks, so you’re just walking the edge of the road. He might think it’s just another piece of street debris…. although the mailbox should tip you off otherwise.

Side note: one of the places I fish a lot is along a walking trail in a housing development. People walk with their dogs all the time, and they all seem to clean up after them. You know who DOESN’T? HORSE OWNERS. I see people riding horses on the trails too, and there are just enormous piles of horse apples in some spots, lmao. We would tar and feather someone for not picking up after their chihuahua, but these horse people are just above it all, I guess, just leaving five pound piles on the trail🤦‍♂️😂 Where’s the outrage for those probably-snooty assholes? Lmao

I have a guy who lives about a block away from me who I kind of like but he's not very neighborhood friendly. He walks his dogs without a leash and when they get to my property, it's sort of woodsy compared to the other properties with more trees and people like to let their dogs poop out in the area by the street because the trees cut off the view from the house and I guess the dogs like the woodsy feel so it's a place where they feel like they're getting a nice natural poop spot.

I know for sure he lets his dogs do it. It's nice and grassy out by the street and I work hard to keep it in good shape so it looks good in the neighborhood. So it kind of ticks me off that the guy does this (he's not the only one there's other secret poopers out there that I am unable to identify).

But I like the guy so I let him get away with it. He kind of compensates by putting flags up and down the street on the telephone poles every year after the winter including some in front of my house. They stay up all spring and summer and into the fall. He gets them from another neighbor who apparently gets them free. Her son was a cop who was killed and I think it has something to do with that. So I consider it a fee for picking up after his dog and it all works out. Love seeing the beautiful Street lined with flags every year.

It's the ones I don't know that tick me off the most.

I'd take my shovel and shovel it up next time you see him and he see's you and I would dump it on his lawn or put it on his driveway.

He needs to see you do this.

Then just smile at him and ignore him if he yells or tries to talk to you.

Or you could hand him a plastic bag and make him clean it up.

No consideration for his neighbors. It's all about him type of person!

I would borrow the biggest toughest dog from a friend and take him for a walk to the offenders house and get him to drop a huge poop in his yard! No not really... I would probably just ignore it. Thats a battle not worth fighting.

That's a common thing around our neighborhood. If we see who did it, we hand them a poop bag and make them pick it up. If we don't see them do it, but know who it is, we pick it up, place the poop in a clear plastic bag, and hang it on their house's door knob.

Some apartment complexes near us now require residents to register their dog and provide a DNA sample. When an unknown pile of poop is found, they examine its DNA, find out what dog did it, and fine the owner... it's a sizeable fine, a few hundred dollars... it also pays for the DNA check. Just the threat seems to work. Their grassy areas are spotless.

I'd actually do nothing at all.

Unlike plastic garbage, this stuff degrades naturally.

My ''lawn'' - in addition - isn't a lawn anyway; it's an extension of nature that happens to be on ''my'' premises only.

In return I expect my neighbour to shut up about what my own dogs leave behind

(which they normally don't do, because I showed them the nearby innocent bushes to intelligently perform what their intelligent master (me) taught them to do).

I'd put a sign on my lawn that the mosquito people use, "Caution: This area has been treated with pesticide." That might get dog owners to keep their dogs off the lawn.

Hubby had that problem when he was in Ohio home. He grounded up some pepper corn into poser and spread around the area the dog pee. That helped.

I cannot tell you what I'd do if I never saw the dog do it as it could be ANYONE'S dog that did it.. but if saw it happen, I would go get the neighbour (asking nicely first) by the scruff of the neck and stand over him until he cleared it..

Out of the kindness of my heart I would pick up the dog shit with gloves & throw it on my neighbors roof or leave it by their car so when they go out they step in shit. On the flip side I always through about renting a pony or a horse & I’ll walk the pony or horse over to my neighbors yard & when it drops a load leave it there.

As the saying goes, "the problem is at the other end of the leash". I really hate these egoistical sorts of dog owners. A partial solution, although impractical solution: Years ago we were out with friends walking the dogs, when one of the dogs peed against an electrified pasture fence. You can't imagine the yelping and jumping! And he always remembered it, he never went close to that plot again.

Well if it's the first time it's happened, I'll act like I don't see it. But, if it happens over and over again, I would wait until he comes by my house again with his dog, before his dog takes a dump, get out there quickly and politely, calmly ask him to please pick it up.

I wouldn't go out there upset or go to his house because it could land u in trouble.

I remember while growing up back in the 60's, neighborhood dogs would ALWAYS be leaving their poop in our yard. My dad would antagonistically complain about it, and would naturally have to go out to clean it up. It was just part of life.
