How far back in life can you remember?

I can only imagine very limited things from when I was a kid or a pre teen, before that I can't really remember anything, I wonder if that's normal or my brain is messed up lol

Umm... only as far as 3 years old, and the memories come in larger chunks the more recent they are. But I do have this one memory from when I was 4... it was before my great grandaddy died, my Aunt Brianna and my dad were in some sort of argument and they were shouting about something... but I remember the plates shattering, and the glass all on the floor. But I also remember that I just stood there watching. I wasn't scared, I was just watching. Only when I seen my cousins running and hugging my grandaddy did I remember to pretend to be scared. But truly, I wasn't. And that same year... I want to say 3 weeks later, my grandaddy passed away. I was shocked and I didn't cry... I actually felt more anger because my cousin was the one to give me the news (she was like 6 I think) But instead of crying... I actually pepper sprayed myself (another long story.) but those are chunky memories that just are from the direct neglectfulness of my father.

I kinda did after like 3 years. It made my eyelashes curlier tho. But my eyelashes fall out often... I'm not sure if it was caused by the pepper spray or not... but that has happened since the "incident".

The earliest thing I can remember I'm pretty sure took place when I was 2 years old. Remembering that kinda proves to me that I have a couple memories of either just before or just after I turned 2. So, it's quite possible I can remember the tail end of being 1. In this one particular incident, I went to the dresser just inside the front door, opened the top drawer, took out a tube of mom's lipstick and drew it all over my naked and freshly washed body. That means that I saw mom go into that drawer several times and put her lipstick on and that those memories were from when I was still 1. When I drew it all over my body was no more than 2 months after my 2nd b-day.

@nolabels One of my other earliest memories is my 2nd Christmas, a few months after the lipstick fiasco. We went to the apt. of some friends of my parents, I know not where, and there was a little girl that lived in the apartment upstairs. She had very dark hair and, for some reason, there was a set of stairs that went from her apt. upstairs into Bob & Pauline's apt. and she was always coming down to visit them. I don't remember the girl's name but, we had a good time playing together that evening. By his time, it was well known that I loved records and music so, Bob & Pauline bought me a Christmas present of a 7" kid's record. It was some woman singing and telling the story of a sleepyhead squirrel. It had a red label but, like all of my other kid's records, mom threw them all away one day when I was in school, probably 7 or 8 years later! As far as I know, that was my first record. Now, I'm up to over 62,000.

@nolabels Yeah, I've always had a very good memory. A few foggy bits here & there but, I tend to remember most of my life. Records actually help with that! If I need to remember something, I'll think of a record I was listening to at that time and that tends to roughly pinpoint when it happened and dredges up other memories of events that also happened at that time.

@nolabels With me, a little bit of it I blame on the root beer Schnapps I drank in the late 80's and the rest of the memory lapses are because if the insanity I've been put through these past 8 years!! Kind of a shock to the system. Like, in late `05, I started taking bass lessons in college and got an a in the class. A month later, dad died and I completely forgot everything I learned in the class!!

One of the things that got me the A was that, the song I played for my final had a low D in it so, to hit that with my 4-string (I was still waiting for my 5-string in the mail), I tuned down so the strings were B E A D. After I played my song, the teacher, who was watching me play, couldn't understand how I got the low D on the E string. I told him that I tuned down to B and that was an instant A for me! Apparently, he'd never thought of that.

Me, too! I've wanted to learn that Fixx bass line for many years but just haven't had or taken the time to learn it. I've seen Dan K. Brown play it and it looks pretty easy but, I just haven't tried.
Well, I was going for the short version of the story. I'd say I was at least in my late 20's. Finding out when those Pee Wee Herman dolls were made will probably give me the year. I had one of Pee Wee and one of Chairy. Also, if I could remember who our bass player was at the time, that'd narrow it down a lot more. Chris = `85 to mid `88, Sharyn = mid `88 to late `88/early `89, Erin = early `89 to late `93, Bill = late `93 to mid `94. Toby = mid `94 to mid `96, Dana = mid `96 to early `05.
Anyway, grandma, at my aunt's house, insisted that I have a couple shots with her even though she knew I didn't drink. I had a shot of peach, one of cherry and possibly one of apricot. It was at least tolerable and nowhere near enough booze in it to do any harm but, I still stayed away from it after that. A few months later, I was hanging out at The Loop Lounge with my brother (4.5 blocks from our house) and, teasingly, he offered to buy me a drink so, I thought I'd shock him by letting him buy me a cherry Schnapps. He did, I downed it and he offered to buy another one and suggested they also had root beer so, I decided to try the root beer. It wasn't bad but, nothing to write home about. Then he said that if you put a piece of ice in it, it tastes just like a root beer float! So, I tried another with ice and it DID taste just like a float! So, I ordered another, a double! I had 2 or 3 more doubles and then called it quits.

It was either that night or a few nights later, that, on the radio, they asked a trivia question and if anybody knew the answer and was the right caller, they win 2 Pee Wee Herman dolls. They asked the question, I told the bar wench the answer and she insisted I call up to win the prize. I did, I won and was told to come to the station to pick them up. So, a day or so later, I went to pick them up and, instead of taking them home, I went straight to the bar to show the bar wench what I won. I walked in and there, at the table near the bar, is my singer and guitarist trying to get Patty to let us play a gig there! They were shocked to see ME there because they knew I didn't drink but, as usual, they offered to buy me a drink so, I shocked them, too by ordering a double root beer Schnapps with ice! Bob couldn't believe it! He saw me slug down that double and said, "Oh! You're secrets out, now!! You're a secret drinker!! All these years you had us fooled!" They bought me 2 or 3 more doubles and, as I was leaving, I noticed that I was having trouble remembering a few things and I put it down to the booze and never drank again.

I'm guessing that you were playing in key, which would have completely changed your fretting, but it was just the D that got his attention, not the rest of the altered fretting?

The medical people told me that with the new medicine I'm on, Coumadin, because of my heart trouble, that if I kept drinking, I'd bleed to death from the inside out.
That didn't sound like it'd be too much fun, so I poured my whiskey down the drain.
I didn't trust myself with it sitting there, staring at me.
I sure wish I could have some.
That weed I was trying last year just kept either freaking me out really bad or it had me so couch locked that I pissed my pants once.

I don't know why people like it so much.

It’s normal for you to not remember things from the ages of 0-5 unless they are really traumatic. However for me I remember a few things from before the age of 5. And one thing that was before the age of 2 that are all not traumatic and I’ve confirmed with my parents that are real.
