How do I deal with a cat that opens the refrigerator and steals food while I'm sleeping?

The cat probably enjoys the thrill of getting the food as much as eating it. I'd bet if you put the same food in its bowl it would turn it's nose up.

Find a way of locking the fridge but leave little treats around the house in hard to reach places the cat has to figure out how to reach.

My grandparents had a smart cat like that. He knew how to open doors by jumping up to pull the handle. Opened cupboards, climbed up all the shelves, because he observed his prey from above. 🐆😂

Not much you can do other than put your car in a separate room or if you're handy, put a lock on your refrigerator.

It is your responsibility to ensure the cat is properly fed. If the cat was properly fed, they wouldn't have to break into the fridge to get food.

Use aluminum foil on the refrigerator. Cats don’t like that.
That is a trick to use on the counter, but I am sure it can be used on the refrigerator, too.
