Why people don't respond to a thank you?

I find it very disrespectful for someone to not respond with a "no problem" or a smile... Is that so hard and what is the best reaction to do in this situation?

Busy people respond based on a query and conclusion pattern so once the issue has been resolved, excessive formalities like extending conversational courtesy is seen as a deliberate theft of the other person's time and a violation of their emotional boundaries.

Friends are also busy people. My friends have the same query and conclusion pattern that professional connections do.

So if you just hanging out and one of your friends helped you out with something so you said thank you but they said nothing back is that normal?

Yes. I think it's normal. It shows they did it because they care about the problem and not because they want emotional gratitude from you. A person who serves you out of concern is better than a person who serves you for social reciprocation benefits.

I have no idea! I will always say "you're welcome" or "My pleasure" because I'd like to think we live in a civilized society FFS! I go to my local liquor store and will spend a handsome amount of money and actually THANK THEM! I have no fucking clue why! Why would I thank someone for giving them my occasionally hard earned money? Because I'm a good person, that's why.
