Do you ever feel lonely on your birthday?

Hey GaG community, it’s my birthday today. I bought my own birthday cake, chose a coffeeshop to blow my candles in, had no one to spend it with, so I just called my dad asking him to keep me company to eat the cake at the coffeeshop house precising that he won’t need to pay anything, just keep me company.

He sat for 10 min (the time it took for me to blow my candles), then left. Not a single happy birthday.

Not from him, not from anyone else by the way.

Right after blowing my candles, I sat in the coffeeshop alone and I’m still there at the time I’m writing this. Wrapped the remaining of my cake back, and just looking at people.

Happy birthday :) Yes I have felt lonely on my birthday. I had a lot of trouble with socialising in the past so often I would try and avoid it but on your birthday it can make you feel alone. Because you're expected to celebrate with people so it makes you think about your (lack of) social connections and how other people see you.

Now I'm doing better but I'm still not the party type. I'll have to think about if and what I wanna do for my next birthday. I think I'll try and celebrate again next year and see how it goes. I've done birthday parties in the past but they were not always great. But I'll try and organize something better and fun for everyone so that the people that come have a good time.

Why is your relationship with your family so bad?

Yes, I do... I turned 45 on the 16th of July.

But there are reasons for that; I have broken with everyone from my past because most, if not all, have been abusive, exploitive or simply didn't give a damn about me. I have had to break off contact with my kids because the ex would not have stopped abusing and harassing otherwise.

But even before that... When I still had my family; I was never a 'priority'... same as on father's day and Christmas too... I have never been important.

Happy Birthday💕 to me birthdays are just another day. Having high expectation can lead to big disappointments. The more you expect from them the more depressed you are when those expectations aren’t met. So if you have no expectations for a day then when something good happens then it’s a great day.
If you equate your self worth based on the actions of other rather than your own value then you’ll always be depressed when the expectation aren’t met. So do yourself a favor and you be the keeper of your own self worth. You’ll be happier🙂

I'm sorry to hear this, I would celebrate it with you if I could. Yes, sometimes I feel lonely on my birthday but it's not because I don't have anyone with me, it's because I don't have a "real family" and my friends are never around when it's my birthday. So I can imagine how you feel.

I've had many birthday like that but what I realized is that you have to love yourself. So if you don't have someone to spend it with? Enjoy that time on your own. Spoil yourself , journal, it doesn't have to be all bad. Solitude can be good sometimes

A lot of us had birthdays like that. I’m sorry that it wasn’t special. It’s honestly nice to have special moments to yourself. Sometimes the source of other peoples stress is their family. It’s nice to do things that you know that would make you happy. It’s not worth relying on others to make you happy or feel special because it’s really setting yourself up for disappointment.

For what it's worth- happy birthday!

Mine is on January 1st, so yes, I know what it's like to be alone; as a kid, everyone was still recovering from Christmas, as an adult, everyone's still hung over from New Year's.

I use it more as a time of contemplation and reflection; thinking back on the previous year and planning for the one ahead.

I tend to ignore my birthday, but I do get lonely, even while not alone.
I make friends easily, but its hard for me to stick with them because most people make me feel like I'm alone when I'm around them.

Take how you felt yesterday, and thats how I feel whenever I'm not sufficiently preoccupied/distracted.

I've spent the last several birthdays at work. Not exactly lonely but not stellar either. Doesn't bother me much. Its just another day.

Being an adult sucks though doesn't it. They don't prepare you for situations like that.

Yes my entire life I had a lonely birthday. I never had a boyfriend celebrate my bday with me , I didn’t even celebrate my 26th bday last year. But this year for 27 I will go alone to another state for vacay
