I know people do not write checks as much as they used to but banks offer overdraft protection on checking accounts so somebody must be using them.

I bounced a check once. I wrote a check the day before I deposited my paycheck. When I found out about it I was so embarrassed. I went to the place where I wrote the check and apologized and wrote a good check on the spot. The guy did not think it was a big deal. When I was in basic training I sat through a lecture about how officers were supposed to be held to a higher standard and honor was a big part of that. One of the things that would get you into trouble was bouncing a check.

There was a House banking scandal years ago where House members wrote bad checks on the Capitol Bank. Some were overdrawn by thousands of dollars. So you can't feel too bad as yours was by accident. Theirs was on purpose.

The House banking scandal broke in early 1992, when it was revealed that the US House of Representatives allowed its members to overdraw their House checking accounts without the risk of being penalized by the House bank, which was actually a clearinghouse.

The scandal also sometimes known as Rubbergate (from the expressions "rubber check" (bounced check) and "Watergate)," but the term is misleading because House checks did not bounce but were honored because the House Bank provided overdraft protection to its account holders, and the Office of the Sergeant at Arms covered the House Bank with no penalties

I have no finance skills… 😂 I blame my parents for giving all the math genes to my older sister.
so yeah!! I have balanced one or two checks and paid the fees.
I have no idea how to balance a check book and have forgotten to pay my credit card bills a few times.
I learned now 😂.
the good thing I know how to make more money than I need and save ore than 1/2. That helped 😜

I may have. I can't remember. If it did, it was a really long time ago. And it would have been for the reason that yours did. Money that I expected to be deposited into my bank account didn't arrive when it was supposed to.

I've have a couple overdrafts like that in my life, where there wasn't enough money in my account to cover scheduled automatic withdrawals because automatic deposits were delayed.
Money in my checking account fluctuates wildly as money goes in and out during the month. And I don't keep much more than I need in it. I keep some money in that savings account to cover overdrafts. But it pisses me off when the bank charges me a penalty for paying an overdraft with my own money.

My credit rating has never been harmed.

I've never used a check in my life sorry. When I was a little kid it was already an outdated thing. And it also seemed weird. You can write someone a check but there's still a chance they'll never get their money. In financial matters reliability and safety are big. But a check seems like the opposite of that to me. I don't know I wasn't around in those times but I am surprised that it was used so widely.

No, I haven't lol. Even though I am young, I still pay all my bills by check. I don't know why but that's how I was taught by my mom. I remember my grandma would go to local stores and ask if she could write a check, then ask if they could wait until a certain date to deposit it! lol I guess that was common "back in the day".

Yep. I done it for a friend, I thought. On Saturday night. 2.4 years ago. She was to have it by Sunday evening. That way I could beat the deposit Monday morning. She didn't and called and rubbed it in. My account of 21 years was canceled. Turns out she went a gambled and after losing she went and got the other that was to be mine and lost it too. Then took it out on me.

The Eurocheque system ended in 2002, I believe I wrote my last check some time before that... and no, it didn't bounce of course. I never had much use for checks anyway, I find all these systems clumsy and slow.

No, but my mom was bought out of her medical practice (mutual decision) and it wasn't cheap. There was a distinct possibility the check would bounce. So we had a party when it didn't
