Why is it not a good idea to take selfies except indoors?

A tragic incident occurred in La Tinta, Guatemala, when a 15-year-old girl, Débora Rebeca Xi Artola, was fatally electrocuted by a high-voltage power line. The teenager was dancing and taking selfies on a rooftop with her friends when the accident happened. The event, which took place last Thursday, was recorded by alarmed locals.

Artola and her friends were rehearsing dance steps on the roof of a two-story building when she inadvertently touched the power cable. The high voltage shock she received likely caused her immediate demise. The video footage captured the terrifying scene as bystanders rushed towards the building, smoke enveloping the girl’s body, which was initially resting on the cable.

The situation took a horrifying turn when the impact caused the girl’s head to be severed from her body, resulting in her falling approximately 20 feet to the pavement below. The incident has left the local community in a state of shock and mourning.

(LONG before "selfies" and fancy-pants cellphones) - - - - we knew a young (23ish) guy who went to the Grand Canyon. He wanted to get up close and personal (with a canyon a mile wide?) So, he went out past a marked area, just to get a little closer look at the Canyon. Those few feet cost him his life!

Add to this the lure of a selfie or pic- on a phone/computerized camera/whatever? No - the risk is just too great.

That's not to say that you couldn't take a pic outside, just use your head. The trouble with common sense is that it is becoming SO uncommon! Flat land, watch your footing, no kids running around, etc.

I have read of more than a few people who got too close to the edge of a cliff to take a selfie. They either slipped on loose gravel or ice and went plummeting over the end. One couple roped themselves together so one could peer over the edge for a selfie. Unfortunately, when you both lose traction, it won't help and both fell over 2,000 feet. They were found still roped together.

If you both lose traction, then there is just twice (approx) that will fall. There are enough dangers in life without pushing my luck on the things that are typically totally avoidable.

La Tinta, Guatemala. There are regulations regarding power lines in most western countries to prevent such things. You would never be in a postion where you could touch a high voltage power line or get on a roof near one. Most people in western countries wouldn't go near an exposed high voltage power line. Basic health and safety.

I’m sorry “smoking hot”? First of all, that’s a quinceñera, and a child still. Second of all, it sounds like the selfie wasn’t the issue anymore than her just being distracted. It’s tragic what happened, but also — that’s a really gross way to title this whole thing. Whether that was you or the original writer, that’s gross.

I would think that's pretty rare, sure it likely occurs more often than indoors but there are more things outdoors that can hurt someone, so it's to be expected.

That sad event has nothing to do with selfies. It has to do with stupidity and people not paying attention to their environment.

But, a lot of these sad stories take place when some people are trying to get original selfies that no one else has done.
