I was a carpenter, but I never licked the wood. I got quite a few splinters though, like every day.
I'd guess a very hard wood like Hickory. I think softer woods probably splinter more.
As for 2x4s, those are usually some kind of pine or fir. Those splinter too easily. You can catch a fingernail in the wood and end up with a long splinter under your fingernail. Every carpenter gets that every now and then, and it sucks. It's just too easy for softer wood to gouge and snag on something.

You want a hard wood. So hickory or maple
