Red wood definitely makes some really beautiful crafting material. I've made some really amazing walking sticks using it. I will note my friend had a stash of some really really old redwood so it's not like we went out and cut down a tree recently. 😉

The obvious answer is "Morning" but I think you're looking for something else.
I occasionally do some building of furniture, gates, fences, and other things around the house, and pine is my preference... it's very easy to work with, inexpensive compared to other woods... and better than IKEA particle board.

Probably cherry. I carve custom designed spoons, and cherry always looks so nice after a coat or two of a mineral spirit and tung oil mix. Plus it's one of the better hardwoods for carving.

I’m partial to ebony and red wood I think. There’s some pretty nice ash woods out there that make some amazing furniture.
