The purpose of the question is to ask if you have the ability to train a person, are you a good mentor?
But, I wanted to ask it in a funnier way lol

No, you will not be able to train your potato to roll in a straight line, even if it was the most intelligent potato. This is not something that is related to intelligence or feelings but to the physics and the shape of its "body".

Knowing that a potato is never perfectly round or evenly shaped, the potato would invariably roll to the side, even with the best willpower. There is nothing an irregularly shaped potato can do against the forces exercised on its surface.

The same principle applies to humans. You can train a human being up to a certain extent but it is not the mentor's power that will impact the person being trained but that person's own will. If there is no will, there will be a disappointing result, even with the best mentor.

I've taught at Northwestern, and now I mentor my grandkids who are home schooled and all at top 5% or better of their age rankings.

Be patient. Use age-appropriate examples. Cross-train wherever possible. Start teaching word prefixes and suffixes at an early age. example- I taught Medical Terminology. ---- ology = study of. cardio ------- = heart. So, cardiology is the study of the heart. Cardio microphone has a sound pick-up pattern shaped like a heart. So, prefix cross-trains into electrical and stage performance. Take advantage of a student's interest in one area to explain others, when possible. Math backs up music in an awesome manner, for example.

I have quite a bit of experience in training. Several groups of people in different countries, sometimes with different languages. Some get it. Some don't.

Give me 10 potatoes. Probably 7 will end up walking in a straight line, 2 will wander side-to-side, and 1 will be obstinate and refuse to move.
