So there's a spa I go to for my lashes and brows. The owner and her husband have not hired other people they work themselves. I did a membership contract for 150/month flat rate. Today, the owner says to me we are required now to charge a 20% gratuity after our service. I told her I had a membership and that it was not included in writing or in my contact to pay 20% gratuity to the owner on top of my members. She said omg I'm sorry, I must've forgotten to send the new contract." I know we sent it out must've accident skipped you.
Long story short I checked their website and it says "gratuity for all services will be 20% to show our team members you appreciate their work". She's not a team member she's an owner. Hmmm 🤔 ðŸ’
No, you're not supposed to tip an owner
Yes you tip owners

Sketchy business? Are you supposed to tip the owner?
Tips are a huge scam unfortunately for some workers they rely on tips to make a decent living because the business owners of bars and restaurants pay them next to nothing. I never leave a tip on a credit card unless I ask the server if she actually gets those tips and I tell her how much I've tipped her, often the employers take a huge cut of the credit card tips. Giving cash is the only way you know your server gets the tip. It's getting worse now you go into a fast food restaurant not usually the chains but small one ofs and they want a 20% tip just to ring up your food at the cash register, that is incredibly stupid.
That’s illegal. The owners & managers are never to receive any tips of any kind. Only the regular employees are allowed to get the tips. I’ve worked at a restaurant where the owner and managers were getting tips; myself along with other employees made complaints about it and they almost lost their business because of it
Thank you!! Thats what I'm saying this is sketchy. Why hasn't she put this in writing? Because she knows its illegal she's not a team member she's an owner. So I definitely will be cutting ties with this establishment
Definitely do that. That’s how a lot of employees get robbed of getting their actual real tips. Especially if it’s credit, they take a piece of it without their employees knowing and customers don’t know that. Some establishments follow the rules since they’re on salary pay. Regular employees aren’t.
@duoride2 can you please share why you'd leave a place with automatic gratuity? Also should an owner be tipped 20% when they have a set rate such as the membership fee? She's the one doing my lashes and from my understanding owners aren't supposed to be tipped employees are.
Tipping is supposed to be about how good the service was or wasn't. With an automatic gratuity where is the incentive to give the customer good service.
Nice explanation. Yeah, I'll shop around. Then she tried to fancy it up and say this is service charge for products. Doesn't the membership cover the products used? Like, what the hell is really going on with this establishment? lol 😆 . so would you end your membership? @douride2
@douride2 thanks I appreciate your perspective I needed a woman to chime in on this because it's hard to find someone to do our beauty maintenance correctly.

Ok the person I'm speaking of is the owner yet she does some work too. Not sure if you read the post.
I did and I don't think owners qualify for tips unless a regular patron specifically gives the owner a tip directly
My thoughts too and for her not to have this in writing and lie saying she sent an updated contact is bs. And illegal
Correct

in my opinion tipping is getting way out of hand. As for the 20% gratuity added on. I would leave anyplace that has an automatic gratuity.

She is just trying to do a run around instead of upping the price. I would leave & look elsewhere.
