As a man at a family dinner is it important for you to sit at the end of the dinner table in your own home or do you think is a useless tradition?

I honestly think it's a superficial thing. The more indicators of authority a man has to have, the less secure he is in his position. A man or woman should be able to sit anywhere and it shouldn't affect the respect levels in the relationship. If a man makes a scene about sitting at the head of the table, it's kind of a tell-tale sign that he doesn't really understand what headship or authority means. Headship is a big responsibility and if a man (or woman) wants the perks, he/she has to deal with the pain.

It's like being a CEO. Sure, the money's great. But a few bad decisions and all of the burden of salvaging the company are on the CEO. Or a military officer; one bad call and a whole bunch of outraged families are banging on your door wanting to know why their sons are dead. That sort of responsibility applies to families, too.

I was married. The man I married sat at the head of the table. But it wasn't an authority demand on his part. In fact, it never came up because he had earned that place 100%. In our entire relationship, he never once insisted on additional respect gestures from anyone. I was more upset if I felt he'd been slighted than he was, and I would have made a scene, too, if he hadn't been so d@mned calm and unaffected. :) But he was as cool and peaceful about it as a summer evening on a mountain lake. I was always a bit jealous of that quality. :D

Real men don't have to have "respect me" stickers. Everyone knows who they are.

Actually, guy or gal, it’s part of a civilized family to have the head of the house at the head of the table. In addition to honoring the elder of the family it’s an easy way to teach younger members of the house about basic etiquette and respect for family, elders, etc.

Not everyone has a guy to be head of the household — e. g., when ours passed on the lady of the house got the hot seat and we all shuffled up one seat — but no, I don’t think these traditions are useless.

I don’t think much of it to be honest , I will sit down on whatever chair is available, I usually do sit at the end of the table when eating dinner with my kids’ they all pretty much know that is my seat , but I don’t demand they move if they are sitting there prior to me. The only chair I kick them off from , is my chair on my porch that I made clear to them that this is my chair , so they know to move when I come out on the porch lol

Logically, I try to sit at the front, or the left corner side of a rectangular table/booth. I'm left handed, so I don't want to be jabbing people with my elbow if they're close to me. Head of the table makes the most sense. But growing up, we had a large round table, so everyone had their "side" of the table.

I don't think it'd really be a big deal - though I still think having dinner together is still important.

I've got a traditional mindset so I like the end on a rectangular table in my own home.

Most of the family and friends I have seem to avoid the issue by having round tables. I'm considering going to next Christmas lunch in armour and asking them where Arthur Pendragon is...

I think it's important to eat at the table as a family. I think it's important that the father sits at the head of the table as well as be served first with the best cuts and that's for the children to see and learn to respect their father.

My hubby is the head of the household. He doesn’t sit at the end.. he sits on a very comfortable spot where he can have an amazing view and still focuses on our conversations.

It is a good thing and establishes the man as the head of the family. It is the same principle as what courts do. They set up high so everyone must look up to them.

We did away with the table long ago. We have a raised coffee table and a U shaped couch. Family living in the modern age. Then we snuggle.
