Is it rude to separate couples at a dinner gathering?

My boyfriends sister in law invited us over for dinner and as soon as we got in she told us that everyone is going to be seated separately from their partner and at separate tables…. my boyfriend didn’t like this and neither do I…. wasn’t this rude of her or what?

i think that's really weird and i wouldn't allow that to happen, even if i was a guest. i'm guessing your boyfriend's sister in law is in a really rocky relationship...

it's not rude but it certainly puts people on the spot. as long as everyone is open to the idea it's okay and fun even. wouldn't be for me.
