If you have a family with a wife and children, would you own a gun just in case for protection over you and your family at home?

Hey men on here, I wanted to get your thoughts on something - would you own a gun for protection if you had a family with a wife and kids?

I know this is a pretty controversial and sensitive topic, but I'm really curious to hear a range of perspectives. On one hand, I can see the argument for wanting that extra layer of security and the ability to defend your loved ones if something terrible were to happen. But on the other hand, the risks of having a deadly weapon in the house, especially with kids around, also seem really concerning.

What do you all think about this dilemma? Would you feel safer and more protected by having a gun in your home to guard against potential threats? Or do you think the dangers and drawbacks of gun ownership outweigh any potential benefits, especially when you've got a family to think about?

I'm sure there are valid points on both sides of this debate, so I'd really appreciate hearing your honest thoughts and experiences. How would you weigh the pros and cons if you were in that situation? Do you think there are better ways to secure your home and protect your loved ones besides owning a firearm?

For me, I’m thinking I might get one to hold for protection for my future family or even myself, probably before I have a family, because knowing the world we live in nowadays and the current state we’re in, people are crazy and try anything, so we try to be safe, aware, and cautious with our surroundings, especially in our homes. I’m not sure yet.

Bonus question: if you were to own a gun… what kind of gun would you get?

I own many and it's quite simple. Protecting my home and family isn't something I want to rely on others for. Time and time again we see that simply waiting for the authorities is a worthless solution (some places have horrendous response times like my city which is around 20-30 minutes). They are just as scared of being shot as anyone else and having a badge doesn't change that.

The other options would be to either hide and hope, trying to escape, or trying to rush people who are most likely armed themselves which is incredibly stupid. Threats need to be dealt with swiftly before they establish control.

The issue is irresponsible gun owners who think leaving them in an unsecured box "hidden" in a closet is enough. Gun safes exist for a reason. Lockboxes that operate with fingerprints and codes for quick access exist for a reason. People don't want to spend the money on securing their weapons and think it's wise to just have it out somewhere "hidden" for quick access.

They also don't train on them regularly to make them actually effective. Firing a gun isn't something for the feint of heart. I've seen people become disoriented just from firing a 9mm and you don't want disoriented people anywhere near a firearm.

A firearm is just an extension of the person wielding it. It's not for everyone. Even in the military, people can get booted out for not being able to qualify with their assigned weapons. Responsible people don't have issues with their kids gaining access to their firearms or any other dangerous household items. Safety first, and you should be doing everything possible to keep your family safe.

in my opinion, relying on others for your own safety shows a very sheltered existence.

I definitely would.. Me and my wife are getting conceal carries if they require some, and going at least every month to the range to train with them.. We'll just keep them where they are locked up and safe away from our kids until we are able to teach them how to shoot as well..

I have a question for you, man. So what if, hypothetically, and God forbid, but what if one of your kids was in the kitchen, and you overheard it if you were asleep or whatever and it sounded like someone was breaking in, but mistakenly took them for a burglar? Would you check and be sure or something different?

A gun is like a fire extinguisher. You might never need to use it, but if you do and you don't have one you're completely fucked. Are you going to use a fire extinguisher or just let your house burn down until the fire department gets there? Are you going to let somebody just shoot people until the cops get there or are you going to stop them?

What kind of gun you should buy depends on what it's intended purpose is. Defense against bad guys at close range? A shotgun or big slow handgun bullets. Defense against big dangerous animals? Big fast bullets, preferably out of a rifle for velocity. Defense against bad guys and hunting medium sized animals from long range? Fast medium sized rifle bullets. Small animals long range? Small fast rifle bullets. Small animals close range? Small slow handgun or rifle bullets.

I own many. I started taking my kids shooting at 2. My wife and I have taken tactical and medical classes together. My children will do the same when they are older.
