If you were to use a device to make videos for memories of your kids, which would you choose: a camcorder or an iPhone/iPad?

Hey everyone, I've got a question I wanted to get some opinions on. When it comes to recording memories of your kids as they grow up, would you choose an old-school camcorder or a more modern device like an iPhone or iPad?

I've been thinking a lot about this lately, especially as I start to imagine what it will be like when I have kids someday. On one hand, there's something really nostalgic and vintage-feeling about those old camcorder videos from the 90s and 2000s. The picture quality might not be as crisp, but there's a certain charm to that home movie aesthetic.

And I bet it would be so cool to be able to pull out those old camcorder tapes when your kids are older and watch them back together, reliving those precious early moments. Like, how amazing would it be to see your baby self or toddler self on that classic camcorder footage? It just feels so sentimental. You can capture and record the birth of your child, take their first steps, ride their first tricycle, and do those other things.

But then again, the cameras on smartphones and tablets these days are just so advanced. The video quality is amazing; you can shoot in HD or even 4K, and it's just so much more convenient to have that capability right in your pocket. Plus, you can easily edit and share the videos straight from your device.

And let's be real, who really wants to lug around a big, bulky camcorder everywhere? An iPhone or iPad is way more portable and discreet for capturing spontaneous family moments.

So I'm really torn! What do you all think? If you had the option, would you go the vintage camcorder route or stick with a more modern mobile device to record your kids growing up? I'm really curious to hear your perspectives on this!

Let's be real. Who in his or her right mind uses an A***e product nowadays?

If I could chose, then it would obviously be a Japanese made video camera since it is not manufactured in the US and is less likely to fail like those cheap US made products.

Then, if you lose your smartphone (obviously not an A***e), then someone could retrieve the pictures stored on the SD card and easily put them online for pedophiles to enjoy.

On the other hand, an old fashioned camcorder using video tapes are less likely to be misused since it becomes increasingly difficult to find a player and to grab single shots to post online. The criminal energy and expense needed is way too important.

Thus, my choice would be B but then, I would never want to take any videos or pictures of kids without their prior written consent.

Cam corder. Cellphones aren't reliable for keeping your long term memories for you.
I had only one video of my late boyfriend and Google chopped my video into 3 slices and ruined my only video of someone who I love.😔

Aww I’m sorry. I think camcorders are a bit more reliable and in storing for memories than probably the new gadgets do

For as long as I can remember I have always taken pictures and video using both camera and smartphone / iPad taking the time to save them “Offline” and “Online” whilst also using a vendor like “photobox” to print to albums and for framing ( vacations , spec occasions , keepsakes etc )


To me it makes little sense to decide only one route as it’s rarely convenient for all purposes at all times.


What IS a constant though is that unless to adopt a plan to backup and cloud store , routinely synchronizing then you risk loss and where memories are concerned it’s just not worth it.

I think longevity should be the main objective.

Both camcorder and iphone will have issues with that. The best thing would be to get it off the apple platform as an MP4 and make several copies. There isn't a lot of media you can really trust for 20,30,40,50 years because most of it hasn't existed for that long.

Magtape loses magnetism, burnt CD/DVD rely on dies and maybe that won't last, thumb drives might fail and Apple might go broke. Possibly the best strategy is to copy to the current most popular format and media as we go through tech change. Always have a backup somewhere remote.

Yes and it still works. I thought that the picture quality was amazing. Now a cell phone does a better job
