Would you get a camera or a phone with a camera?

Before Iphones and Smartphones were a thing, whenever I would travel overseas around the year 2007 I would always take my digital camera with me.

I'd gone between Iphone and Samsung and still never found photo or video quality great on either.

I'm going to Samoa soon and I don't want to spend thousands on the new latest phone.

Is there a good camera you can buy?

I really haven't looked, but I think the "mid-price" digital camera market has largely been gutted by smartphone cameras. I used to have (and I think I still have) a Sony from about 10 years ago that was quite good for a $300ish camera - It was 8-10 MP and most importantly had a 12X optical zoom - something you just won't get on a smartphone. It certainly wasn't "pro-level" quality (I have a Nikon DSLR for that), but it was small enough to carry in a large pocket and with the zoom could get pictures that you could never get with a smartphone. I'm not sure such a thing even exists today.

Personally I feel a modern phone is up to the task. If you want professional photos and have the skill to take them, as well as suitable lenses and so on, absolutely a camera is somewhat better.

The vast majority of people won't need that and probably won't produce much better photos if they had.

For me, if you use it a lot or professionally a camera is worthwhile and otherwise not. Most modern influencers and alike do perfectly fine with their phones and no one ever complains.

Thanks, I do have a cheaper Samsung at the moment, I've noticed that when I try to take photos of the sea or beach the sea water and clouds colour turns out grey instead of blue, so I don't want to spend a lot of money on a camera phone if it's going to do the same thing. I use my camera mainly for travel, I went away to Europe last year and this phone I have now wasn't great

Probably $1000 Australian dollars or less. I always used to get Canon in the past but haven't bought a camera in years
