Yes they definitely do but we can't internalize negative thoughts even when that's what we're getting from the world in that moment. Or if we do we have to try and overcome that later. I've been struggling with trauma anxiety and just feeling like I don't belong or fit in my whole life pretty much. It has taken me a long time to figure things out. I'm dealing with it and I feel like I'm making progress faster the longer I'm staying on it.
Even when things are hard you need some kind of positive to hold on to. You need to believe and know that things can be good. Just going outside on a sunny day for a walk or a tv show you like, or talking to someone you connect with online if you're not up for irl socializing etc. Just small things that keep you from spiraling. If you start amplifying the negativity from outside with your own mind then you'll just make it a lot harder for yourself.
Personally my life has been shaped by tragedy
Age 9 My aunt died in a fire
Ace 12 My younger brother was killed in a road accident
Age 16 Grandfather died of cancer
Age 19 his wife died of cancer
Age 23 Grandmother died of a ruptured heart
Age 25 her husband died of a ruptured aorta
Age 27 my dad died of a brain tumour
Age 39 my wife got a terminal diagnosis
Age 53 My wife died unexpectedly
In between those events, technically I died in 2020, I lost my leg, full kidney failure (thankfully partially recovered), liver failure, a 3 month coma, diabetes and so much else I'd run out of space to list.
But...
Losing hope is a choice, not an inevitability.
I came through that and at 53 with all that shit behind me there must be a herd of horses around here somewhere...
My life as not been that tragic. Born to a family ripe with autism, Diabetes since 14, removed from employment at 59.5 years of employment. bankruptcy, Right BKA. left TMA, I depended heavily on my hands for consolation through music, lost the use of my right thumb.(No opposable thumb) Most of the bad shit happened latter in life and I expected it to happen. I am 74 now. Looking for the pony.
You'll find it. Never underestimate the power of Hope.
I love the passage in Hebrews 11 - Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of what we do not yet see. That's not from any published translation, I have a good friend who is a Greek scholar who told me that's what would have been understood by the people reading the Greek in the first century.
I'm not looking for ponies. I'm looking for Shire Horses!

Yeah I defo think it changes you. I used to be a hopeful person and always had a dream of something better. Now I just go with the flow and take what comes to me. I don't really care about anything or actually value any type of future. Like my aunt just died yesterday and I don't even care, which is odd because she was a really nice person but I just feel nothing.
I think they can affect us when they happen but whether it changes who we are for good depends on someone's tolerance and how much thick skin they have. I see it as things that have wounded me but not paralysed me. I mean, if it was really bad, it would kill me, right?

Yes, absolutely. When a wish is broken, it can lead to feelings of disappointment, sadness, and even anger. The loss of hope can be even more transformative, but as I always say, it is not what knocks us down, but how quickly we get back up that counts in the end.
They do change us but too many people use them to justify being less than good in a coping mechanism type of way
Everyone goes through shit in life
But we are all still expected to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps if needed
“Daddy didn’t love me so I’m an absolute asshole” only works up to a certain age
But by your mid 20’s you should be over it and taking charge of your life
Wishes are wishes & wishes aren’t guaranteed & you know what they say about wishes right? You can wish in one hand & shit in the other & see which one fills up faster.
Wishes if they come true they can change people & if wishes don’t come true they can also change people as well.
Some people grow from it and get back up but in my case it beat me down to the point I cry myself to sleep some nights. I've pretty much given up I just can't take it anymore and don't know what to do. Even my dad and therapist don't really know what to do because my problems are rooted in things they can only consol but not really advise on how to actually fix.
Yes. I have learnt to prepare dealing with the worst outcome just to protect my mental health. I used to be that person with “good vibes only” Not anymore.
Of course. A lost love can literally, albeit peripherally, kill you if you're not careful. This is particularly true among men.
Yes, I don't take my hopes and wishes seriously anymore. If they get fulfilled, good. If not, it pearls from my like water from duck feathers.
Child abuse and poverty will get you off to a really bad start. I'm glad I'm not on drugs or in prison by now.
I think they make is a bit more jaded BUT that is not something that has to be static. One can become more hopeful as well in ones own soul.
Broken wishes can either remind us of our limitations or else remind us that we need to wish harder. Ido not think that I have ever gave up hope.
Yes, it does change the way we see the world... like i no longer get as disappointed by things as i used to be... and i don't really expect anything now... kinda indifferent to the situation now..
Losing hope to have the life one wants can destroy lives.
I think broken promises and lost hope have shaped me
I think it makes into who we are possibly make us stronger.
Yes it has changed, I feel more sad more often.
Yes, it's a deep question. All of our life experiences shape us to some extent. I believe the negative ones affect us deeper.
Yes of course.. that is why I am who I am right now.
Yes. Life teaches you who you can trust. I trust God, and my family and that is it.
Yes it does. You learn and grow...
It made me a callous and cruel person.
It always does. Even to those who say it doesn't.
Yes, it makes me depressed.
Sad life changed me, it shaped me into a depressed person.
Pain kills.
