In everyday use I prefer pencils. ''F'' as an allrounder, and ''H'' for technical sketches.
For ''official stuff'' I prefer gel pens, 0.5 or 0.7.
What kind of official stuff?
Documents, administration forms, messages to others that are meant to last
I absolutely avoid writing anything by hand, but when I must, I have a couple of Fisher "space pens". It's a high-quality pen with a pressurized ink cartridge, so it will write at any angle, even upside down, and the ink will write on almost anything.
For just scribbling or jotting down a message, usually a Skilcraft ballpoint pen liberated from a supply room. For more serious things (cards, notes, letters) a Montblanc Meisterstueck fountain pen (Leonard Bernstein commemorative edition).
Usually if I'm just writing for fun I use a pencil but if I have to like sign something I use a pen
