Have you ever had your car stolen?

My car was stolen last night. I bought it to replace my Suburban that some dumb kid totaled 4 months ago.

Nope, I still have my first car and only car and I got my hands on the worst sack of shit (sorry, metal) I could skeeve off of someone who couldn't wait to get rid of it and it was definitely a deathbox when I got it, the doors were falling off, the dashboard had multiple meteor dents in it, the steering wheel and gear stick looked like someone took huge bites out of them, not to mention the bombsite that was under the hood... I'd put in pics because it genuinely looked like someone tried to destroy in every way possible.

Anyway, it was free so I fixed it up to the best of my nonexistent ability (thank you YouTubers for the car videos) so it doesn't pass out on me on the road and start shitting bricks just braking gently lol

I don't think this will pass the roadworthy test in a few months. Last time I brought it to the mechanics they wondered how I drive it because there's no steering wheel or gear stick as such and I had to show them how everything does, technically work "fine" just doesn't look it!

So. I would question the intelligence of a thief willing to touch this thing. Unless they want to strip their dignity as well as parts.

You have to look at a car and estimate the cost of the car plus necessary repairs vs the cost of just buying a better car and saving yourself the hassle. Buying a jalopy gets frustrating, I've bought a few in my time but did most of the repairs myself

The cost of the car was somehow zero and I had too much time on my hands after graduating so in this case it was not a big cost overall... I got improvising and made loads of mistakes along the way with nobody to help without breaking the bank but I learned everything the hardest, cheapest and most inefficient way possible. So now I know what not to do and have ended up with something the mechanics have said is "roadworthy".

There's something chillingly cool in that suffering or maybe I just enjoyed fucking up and recoiling lol

That's life working on old cars, can't really get around it unless you're a professional mechanic and you've worked on that same car a bunch of times

That's also how I learned how to work on cars, but there was no YouTube. You just had to grab a book and fuck shit up until you learned a better way to do it

I have had things stolen out of my car several times usually at night. I have had my windows broken and attempted theft. I have never had the whole car stolen yet fortunately.

Nope, luckily enough. But I live in a pretty safe area. Although I did have someone try to steal a car once when I lived in jacksonville. I had one extra key that I had wrapped in paper towel and plastic and then taped to the inside of one of my hubcaps. Shortly after I moved I had to get my tires replaced and subsequently noticed that the hubcap where the key was wasn't put on correctly so I pulled it off and the key was gone. I was the only one in the world that knew that that's where the key was. So I jammed little sticks in all of the locks to prevent the key from being used since I had a remote. It was obviously someone from the shop that changed my tires, but I couldn't prove it. I did go back to the shop and made sure to tell everyone that could hear that someone in their shop is a thief. Of course they didn't do anything about it. A few days later I noticed that someone had been messing around with the locks because of scratch marks, but they couldn't get the key in the slot.

In 1969, my very first car got stolen when I was 15 1/2 and still had my learners permit. My dad bought me a cherry-red, 1965 Corvair convertable with a black top and black interior. It was pristine.

My mom drove it to the mall and it disappeared. They recovered it at the same time that we got the settlement offer from the insurance company. But the thieves had thrashed it and put lots of miles on it, so we took the settlement and gave up the car.

I had only driven it once. It was supposed to be my car when I got my license.
