Elevator (Lift) Etiquette - Do you push floor buttons for others?

The elevator (lift) is full of people. You are standing near the buttons for each floor.

Do you ask what floors people want and push the button for them?

Or do you just push your own floor and let them push theirs?

I don’t get on crowded elevators, and i won’t stay on one if it fills up while i’m in it. I use the stairs unless the climb is five stories or more. So if my trip is reduced to no more than five, my abhorrence of other people’s hygiene and etiquette need not be triggered at all. To be perfectly honest, i might just take the stairs even if a crowded elevator forces a longer climb. Unless i’m in a terrible rush or i need to arrive pristine, a long stair climb is less likely to stress me out than putting up with complete strangers in my personal space.

I always ask which floor they want to go to. Depending if they get off before me, I'll push for them and then for myself. If I need to get off before them, I'll push for my floor first. Just common sense and a bit of savoir vivre.

No. People enjoy pushing their own button.
People ask me "Third floor, please." I'll reply "You sure you don't want to push the button?" It brings a smile and usually a small conversation. Lights someone up and passes the time.

It is both polite and most convenient for me to push all the buttons when I am the closest person to them.

Usually I just press the button for my floor when I walk in the door and then move to the back of the elevator. I'm 6'3" not your doorman. If you want to be able to see when your floor comes up, move to the front of the elevator. Tall people to the back of the bus, short people to the front. If you're a jockey and you want to press buttons that's up to you.

I have no regular procedure here.

On a bad day and as an experiment, I might press ALL buttons and leave before the door closes.

On my nicer days I may respond to requests.

On my horny days I let the pretties squeeze past me to push whatever they feel fit to push.

Anyhow... I prefer to use the intelevator.

I lived in Japan for over a decade, and it took like 3 elevators just to get to my condo. If I'm closest to the buttons, I ask everyone and follow the requests. Those who know the basic social routines in Japan already know the routine.

If I’m near the buttons, I’ll usually ask, “What floors?” and push for everyone — it’s polite, efficient, and avoids the awkward reach-around. But if someone’s already going for it, I mind my business. Small kindnesses make shared spaces better. 🛗😊

Yes, normally I’ll ask what floor they need and push the button. Guys in return have done this for myself as well.

I push for the person sometimes depending on how many people are in the elevator, but I’ve never seen an elevator panel with the 13th floor button so I’m not sure where you got this picture from

If it is full, I will ask people coming in what floor they are going to. If it is not full, I step aside and I don't stand near the buttons.
