I'd say mam.
Most of England uses mum.
North East England and Wales uses mam
Birmingham and parts of SW Ireland uses mom.
While ma is common in Ireland.

Chances are if your American of British ancestry you still use the word from the relevant area

It's not just a personal preference; it's an unconscious echo of a spiritual reality that's been dead for centuries. 'Mom' is a modern, gut-level, blood-based word. 'Mama' is a fossil. It comes from a time when the spiritual world was 'outside' the human being, when a person's entire reality was their bloodline. Now, the spiritual is 'inside' us. Using 'mama' today is an atavistic echo, a remnant of a consciousness that has been superseded. It's like using a word for a feeling that no longer exists.
