818 opinions shared on Other topic. @jennz6 Jennz, I would advise against a bow and arrow or a crossbow if he is a hunter. There are bowhunters that go deer hunting. If they shoot a deer and NOT through the heart, the deer will run, until it bleeds to death. A HORRIBLE way to die.
Depends on what kind of hunting... Upland game hunting/hunters will us a 'shotgun' for small game, very effective, and certainly more humane.
(I gave up hunting with my dad as a teen, as I could not BEAR to kill another animal, for no good reason, even though we did eat wild rabbit at times)
As you can tell, I am not fond of hunting or 'hunters"

Shotguns are for the birds. No, that's not a snarky comment, *literally*, they are for bird hunting.
- 8 mo
@Curmudgeon Apparently you know very little about upland game hunting. Shotguns are the gun of choice for upland game hunting. Rabbits, Pheasant, Quail, Fox, and squirrel.
"*literally*, they are for bird hunting" So much for 'editorial opinion", Why make such a comment when you don't know what you are talking about? - 8 mo
Fair enough, they may be for other critters, but they definitely are for birds and not deer. Rifles with sights for the latter.
- 8 mo
@Bricealan This is a very compassionate answer.
- 8 mo
@Curmudgeon I spent many years in my teens upland game hunting with my father and many others and NO ONE hunted with anything other than a large bore (16 gauge/12 gauge) shotgun. I hunted with a 28-gauge shotgun but preferred a 20 gauge.
Asker8 mo@flower7
Thank you for everything honey- 8 mo
@Curmudgeon My apologies, Sir, for my rather terse answer. You were gentlemanly enough to respond in a polite manner, to what I now see was my uncalled-for response.
I stand corrected, for my rudeness.

@DryGermanGuy This seems like a good compromise. A cool weapon that also doesn’t require much knowledge to purchase.
1.4K opinions shared on Other topic. Compound bows are meant for hunting but usable ones are expensive.
With rifles it's difficult to say, because different calibers are meant for different targets. With bolt action rifle.308 or.270Win you can't do anything wrong. Cal.22, .223, .240 are too weak for deer hunting. Cal. .336, .300 WinMag, Mauser 8mm are too powerful for deer hunting depending on distance. There are dozens of other calibers but ammunition can cost a lot for less common calibers.
I don't think you will find something proper under 1000$ in those both gift categories.10 Reply

Even in some of the shittyest totalitarian countries with little respect for individual autonomy you can often have a rifle for hunting.

Sure, it’s not the first gun, And I’m sure there’s background checks for the other guns he owns- 8 mo
Okay. Go to a gun show, strike up a conversation with a mid-size dealer, and ask for their recommendations.
- 8 mo
@DonaldDarko Yes, but still illegal for a convicted felon. I don't know the guy and don't want to make assumptions.
- 8 mo
I think convicted felons should have all the same rights as everyone else, they paid for their crimes with hard prison time.
- 8 mo
@DonaldDarko I'm taking about the way things really are.
- 8 mo
The way they are now, with effort, who knows. Laws can be changed.
Do you know what he already owns? I honestly think you might be better off with accessories.
Hunters normally have very specific preferences when it comes to their weapons.
Unless he's a gun collector and simply likes having variety, which some guys do, I probably would avoid buying him a new piece.
A custom made skinning knife would be a nice gift. It's harder to go wrong with knives. They tend to be more of a collection piece for most hunters then their actual weapons.

8 moHe's probably already got those things and he's picked them out exactly the way he wants for his technique. What you can buy him is boxes of ammo or some arrow points. If you can find some points he likely hasn't tried yet, he might enjoy experimenting with them. I suggest these things because they are things that hunters run out of and always need. All the rest an avid hunter will already have and it'll be tuned just to his exact style so you won't know exactly what he likes. It's probably that way with ammo and arrow points and the like as well, but he'll probably still be glad to get them.

Oh, did I tell you? I saw on the news that a lady was pumping gas, and somehow, a random spark ignited the vapors, and her jacket sleeve was instantly engulfed in flames... emergency personnel were called and it sounds like she'll be okay, but they still arrested her for violation of a local ordinance -- she had a firearm.

8 moSome hunting depending on the game requires only a bow and arrow and some can use a rifle so it really depends what they hunt, if it’s deer you probably could get the most common rifle that is bolt action and 30-06 type ammunition with a scope, maybe a Winchester or Remington

I don't know 🤷♀️ bear 🐻 rabbit 🐇 deer 🦌- 8 mo
Bear would need the rifle I mentioned and probably the pig, but rabbit is small game and only needs a 22 caliber rifle which are cheaper to buy and even in some Walmarts depending where you live, can even use a high powered are pellet rifle to hunt rabbits or squirrels and only need to buy pellets and no ammo to fire it since it’s air driven. You could probably just buy a 22 caliber. Gamo air rifle, it’s cheaper than a regular white rifle and can use it for target practice and small game.

8 moGet your friend talking about firearms and you’ll most likely find out pretty quickly what they really want but don’t yet have.
If you’re trying to completely surprise them, a gift certificate to a local shop should be adequate. Or take them to a range that loans/rents firearms to try out. They’ll spill about what they like and what they don’t.10 Reply

The same applies for archery. If he uses it for hunting, you will most likely want to consider a compound bow. A knowledgeable salesperson will be able to guide you to an appropriate choice based on its intended use.
1.3K opinions shared on Other topic. Rather get him a gift voucher for a sports shop. I could tell you to get a certain kind of rifle or bow, but they'd be my preferences based on what I hunt. Africa's prey are vastly different from Europe and the Americas. Big game is a relative term - what takes down an elk may barely tickle a cape buffalo.

918 opinions shared on Other topic. Maybe just a gift certificate to a sporting goods store or a local gun shop. Bows are hard to buy for someone because they really need to be fitted and set up for the individual. Guns are a little easier but there are so many the choose from and each person has personal preference.

I used to look at the crossbows before I bought a gun. It felt like a nice middle ground between bows and guns. Though I don't do any hunting and was looking more for self defense so I ended up with a pistol. If you do go for the rifle, I think bolt action is the best way to go. Whereas if you go for a crossbow or bow you will probably want to look at the draw weight and compare it to the recommendation for the animals he likes to hunt. For deer bows are typically 50 lbs. and crossbows are 175 lbs.
