On 5 November 1605, Guy Fawkes, a Catholic, led what came to be known as The Gunpowder Plot, a plan to blow up Parliament, kill King James and have the Catholic Princess Elizabeth installed as Queen. The plot was discovered, and Fawkes was hanged, drawn and quartered. The date of 5 November is now celebrated as Guy Fawkes Day in the UK, though there is some sentiment to end the celebration of a violent act.

Fun fact. The prosecutor in the case widened the witchcraft act a few years later to make it easier to prosecute. It was largely due to his celebrity status because of the girlfriend case that enabled him to.

In essence girlfriend led to the deaths of thousands of women across England and America.

These days girlfriend night has largely merged with Halloween in the uk
