Empathy and the ability to place yourself in someone else's shoes have nothing really in common.
The definition of the word "empathy" is:
"The ability to understand and share the feelings of another".
I consider myself to be empathic but I could not place myself in the shoes of a criminal for example. Those are totally different and not connected.
Empathy is, to me, the fact that I can feel emotions towards injustice to people and animals and not emotions for a person that causes injustice like a criminal.
You can, however, feel empathy for a person that did something by negligence but not because of wilful harm to someone else.
No, empathy is like symbolically putting yourself in someone elses shoes.
It's the same thing
