What is the best home indoor floor material and why?

We installed LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) flooring throughout our house. It's durable, not slippery, and is easy to keep clean. It comes in a variety of colors, so you can have a wood look if you want.

LVP is built in layers, and some of those layers act as a cushion, so the floor is not hard like a rock. It's not soft like carpet either, but for us, it's a nice compromise.

Our floors are granite and marble. I can actually feel the difference between them with my bare feet and I like marble best. We have some handmade rugs as well in various places which are nice as it isn’t all one thing, meaning stone.

The stone floors won’t wear out like carpet, even wood floors which need resurfacing and are easily damaged due to water, they are always shiny and nice. But if you drop a glass it is 99/100 that it will break. Plus it looks better than tile, IMHO.

Yes, our rugs are Indian design and Oriental. We used to have Persian but kids and wife ruined them. That was sad.

I have Italian marble tiles, which are slippery with wet shoes. However it's easy to clean and with floor heating very comfortable. In bath I have ceramic tiles which are less slippery but those tiles need more effort to be clean.
Wood laminate is okay but once it's too wet it can deform. I find carpets less hygienic but some people like this type of floor surface.

I agree. Wood laminate and carpet get really dirty. Better to have an area rug if you desire the feel of carpet in a particular area.

I used porcelain which is easy to clean with colored grout.

Wood laminate is a definite no for me as it is too fragile. Real wood is the only wood option

As someone who’s moved a lot and advised many homeowners, I’ve learned there’s no single “best” material—there’s the best for *your* lifestyle.

My personal hierarchy:

- Main living areas: Engineered hardwood or luxury vinyl plank (LVP). Hardwood looks premium, boosts resale; LVP is tougher with kids/pets and moisture.
- Kitchens/baths: Porcelain tile or quality LVP—waterproof, easy to clean.
- Bedrooms: Carpet if you like warmth and quiet; hardwood + rugs if allergies are an issue.

If you share your climate, budget, and household (kids/pets), I can recommend a specific combo.
