Is it blasphemy to get drunk on St Patrick's day?

All credit for this question goes to @purplepoppy who suggested it on my "what should I ask?" question and it's perfect for today 'cuz it's St. Patty's day and I am running around like a chicken with its head cut off doing errands and chores I put off all month and I don't really have time to think up any other questions 'cuz now I have to go get ready to go get drunk on St Patrick's Day 'cuz it's not blasphemy for Pagans but I wanted to ask my daily question for the site.

And so I ask, Is it blasphemy to get drunk on St Patrick's day?

Yes it is. St Patrick's day is the one day the Irish aren't supposed to drink. Up until 1970 all pubs closed for the day. It's a feast day not a drinking day.

Ironically Patrick's last words were to tell everyone to mourn him with a glass of whisky.

Apparently the Irish immigrants who settled in Boston here in the USA never got that memo from the Church. St. Patty's day in South Boston Irish neighborhoods have been a nonstop party in celebration of Irish ancestry since I was a kid. My grandparents were Scottish not Irish but that never stopped my entire extended family from joining in.

St Paddy's day is more a modern American invention, far different from the traditional Irish one

That's what I always thought. In South Boston it was always more of a cultural celebration by immigrants who were displaced from Ireland coming together to celebrate their common heritage in their new home. At any rate it was always a happy crowd enjoying a good time.

Blasphemy, according to the Modern Catholic Dictionary, is "Speaking against God in a contemptuous, scornful, or abusive manner. Included under blasphemy are offenses committed by thought, word, or action. Serious contemptuous ridicule of the saints, sacred objects, or of persons consecrated to God is also blasphemous because God is indirectly attacked. Blasphemy is a grave violation of charity toward God." So strictly speaking... maybe, maybe not.

Either way though, it's not in keeping with the spirit of the day or with the life and mission of this holy saint and bishop of the Church.
