Why do so many people say, "I'm not even gonna lie", when it makes you sound like you lie constantly, just not this one time?

I think it’s just become a figure of speech at this point. Most people aren’t literally implying they lie all the time..

I think they’re just emphasizing that they’re about to be unusually honest or blunt. Kind of like saying, “Honestly…”

Could be. So far, the ONLY times I've ever said that I wasn't lying is when someone accused me of doing so or looked like they didn't trust what I just told them. I think the last time I said that was about 40 years ago. Maybe 50.
